Reaching back to his Kansas City Chiefs roots, Packers coach Mike McCarthy has chosen 23-year NFL coaching veteran Dave Redding to replace strength and conditioning coach Rock Gullickson, an NFL source said.

Redding was coach Marty Schottenheimer's strength coach for all but two years from 1982-'06, serving in Cleveland ('82-'88), Kansas City ('89-'98), Washington (2001) and San Diego ('02-'06). McCarthy was a quality control assistant and quarterbacks coach under Schottenheimer from 1993-'98 and has said many times that Schottenheimer has had a big influence on him.

McCarthy chose Redding over assistant strength coach Mark Lovat, who will remain on the staff in his current position. Mondray Gee will remain as strength and conditioning assistant.

Redding will continue much of the same free-weight techniques that Gullickson employed, but McCarthy's hope is that he will create a more comfortable environment for the players. Sources have said that McCarthy's main reason for replacing Gullickson was that he did not think players were responding well to the program and needed to make a change.

Well that and the fact that everyone seemed sluggish and injury prone last year except for the newbies.

I saw where it said veteran, and then I thought it said he was 23 years old...then I realized he has been a coach in the NFL for 23 years...haha I was like WTF?

Anyway, I don't know anything about him but I guess it's a good hire considering he's a veteran.

Why was he fired so many times, though?

The article indicated that he followed Schottenheimer for his entire career. Nothing about being sacked or anything.

God I'm loving the hires they've done so far. KEEP IT COMING!

We have to remember that this is McCarthy's first head coaching position. He seems to have absorbed some hard lessons early. I like the learning curve.

Nothing here says he was fired.

Perhaps he was taking a positive career adjustment based on things like Freedom Of Creativity or based on the facility, and opportunities to do what he needs to do based on those Facilities.

From what I understand, the Packers have one of the best facilities for training in the NFL. If I was a S&C Coach I would certainly consider that in the opportunities I was presented.

Go Pack Go.... I too looked at it that way, when I first read the post. I just needed to sit back for a second and reconsider how I looked at the hire.

MEGATRON makes a great point... He has been loyal to Marty, and followed him.

Good Observation Meagatron.

Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
