I've always felt if the right player was there you go get him. I felt it with Randy Moss and Jason Taylor actually as well. Now I accepted that Thompson didn't go get Moss and I obviously didn't call for his head because of that. The Packers ended up doing very well. I was dissapointed, but not ridiculous like some harsh critics are.

That was then.

Now I believe the same as a lot more people do and that's go into free agency. Time to take a risk. It's not like Charles Woodson was a safe signing. I recall a lot of people and I was one of them being very critical of Woodson when he was signed.

This year I've said in multiple threads about where we should spend $$$ on and that's the offensive and defensive line. I also think we should use the early draft picks on those positions. If the Packers don't then my opinion of this football team will probably be harsher than it was in quite a while. We'll see though, as Pack I believe said, we're so used to nothing happening in free agency, that by July we're all optimistic.

Over at packerchatters, they went on for over 90 pages on the Randy Moss deal. I didn't post a single opinion, as the subject seemed so divisive. I didn't realize at the time that it was just practice for what was to come. At the time, I was rather lukewarm on the idea of Randy Moss...frankly, I was leaning towards not wanting him, due to work ethic issues, and I thought he had lost a step. I think it fair to say that (and NO, I am NOT reopening that debate) Ted Thompson had enough legitimate reasons to not go crazy in an attempt to secure his services. I hate it when those with a continued agenda look back at signings and non-signings made by TT. To be clear, I am not in any way casting this upon you, Porky...I suspect you and I run very similar in our perspectives. I find your posts well-reasoned, cogent, and entertaining to read...like mine ... :thumbleft: :thumbleft:

Along comes the Favre fiasco. This will be the great polarizing issue all will refer to when discussing anything of controversy regarding the Pack.

I pointed out to my dad once that he was in the minority on the one true deciding factor in what kind of person you really are. You see, my dad is a stander. I'm a runner. When a bee or a mess of bees come around, what do you do? Many runners think they can be quasi-standers, and will ignore the bees, as best as possible, but if the bees "press", they will crack under the pressure and roll out and away. Not my dad and his fellow standers...they will stay in ignore mode, and be none the worse for wear. Now a stander can't run, and a runner can't stand, or they will be stung by those bees. Why draw this analogy? A- because I just like it, and B-because it is reflective of the polarization between the Ted Thompson supporting crowd as regards "the decision", and the Brett supporting crowd.

I am a staunch Ted Thompson supporter in the "decision". I will not change, and am fully cognizant and understanding of those that are on the other side of the equation. This now goes back to my bee analogy. I do not like or trust a Brett supporter of the decision when they enter into the fray as regards decisions made by TT... It equates to a runner attempting to temporarily stand amongst the bees. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I know that many former Brett Favre crotch-sniffers have ostensibly moved on, and I know I shouldn't hold that position held against fellow posters...but I do.

I also feel a sense of entitlement in the criticism department when it comes to TT, for having given him my support, and further I am one hell of a lot more interested in the critique of Ted Thompson by those that held firm in their support of him during the debate. I could go into the whys..but my fellow supporters allready know them, because they are smart. :thumbleft:
Ted Thompson doesn't deserve much blame for the Randy Moss thing. Nor for the The Gonzales thing. One that pissed me off, seemed to fly below the radar of most Ted Thompson haters, and that was a failure (at least to my knowledge) of any attempt to secure the services of Alan Faneca. That one still pisses me off, and it further pisses me off that I had to remain mostly silent about it because I didn't feel like giving the crotch-sniffers ammunition.

As I have said...well, I've said what you said. As I quoted from a fellow poster from Packerchatters...Forgot the quote, but here's the gist... Ted has done an excellent job in securing a multitude of 2- 3 year project talent players to rebuild this team. This luxury no longer exists, and he must now start to secure players that will make more of an immediate impact. If he doesn't do that, the debate will rage here and elsewhere, my prediction being that from a personal standpoint, I will argue aggressively with those that supported Ted Thompson in the fiasco, and either completely ignore or flame those that I have come to know as BF crotch-sniffers.

Build the lines, Ted... that's what I started out to say. :thumbleft:

With all the criticism going on atm, he'll nearly be forced to sign someone.

If he doesn't sign at least one free agent this off-season, he'll have a crapload of people over him, and I can't see him wanting to go through that after the whole Favre saga.

What I would see him do though, is signing some crappy OT for 1 mil a year, who sits on the bench most of the time, to somewhat please the fans.

I basically agree with you Rock. I think Ted will basically be forced into signing an A-list free agent. He got crap about it last year, but we won a lot of games, so he got off the hook. He got crap about it in the preseason this year, but because of last year, he was given a bit of a reprieve. Now, because of our record this year, regardless of injuries and the fact that we have one of the toughest schedules in the league this year, that reprieve has been rescinded. Ted almost has to make a splash this year. Time to do a canonball into the free agent pool Ted, for better or worse.

I believe it is the time to give greater consideration to get the FA talent to put us over the top. IMO we needed this influx of good young talent and build the kind of depth a team needs to compete for sixteen games and then the playoffs.

We are obviously competitive and can stay with teams but are lacking what we need to get over the hump. A consistent pass rush and OL blocking.

I think there will be pressure on Thompson to produce and not rely soley on the draft and building from within to get where we need to be. The good news is I don't think we need a boat load of players to do this.

If Ted concentrates on even one good OL and one good DL I think we have enough talent with the injured guys coming back to turn these close losses into "W's".

The dropoff in production on defense in sacks and pressures from last year is the single most glaring deficiency on an otherwise pretty solid football team.

I think Ted is smart enough to know we are close and if we were getting after the QB this year would have turned out totally different.

whose to say that Ted Thompson wasnt planning on going into Free Agency this year anyway. Whos to say that even if we were 13-0 right now, Ted wouldn't be picking his free agents out right now?

We had to right the ship. It was headed for a massive iceberg. Ted purged the awful roster, got a great base started though the draft and now has a very talented yet underachieving roster. What this did, was change the course of the ship away from that Iceberg. A lot of people wanted to just go full steam ahead and try to bust through the iceberg. Ted slowed the ship, corrected the course and we have completely missed that iceberg. Who's to say he isn't planning on going full steam now?
Ted Thompson haters tend to be so short sighted, I'm glad we have someone with the vision and the balls to fix things no matter what people say.

Hey defoster i hope you weren't calling me a Favre sniffer i'm a die hard Ted Thompson hater lol. And this year Ted Thompson has screwed himself. If he don't do anything in Free Agency you Ted Thompson lovers will be pissed, and if he does make a splash in FA then he will just prove the Favre lovers right and that Ted Thompson has an ego and wanted Brett out of GB. The reason behind that is Brett offering to take the money out of his contract to sign Moss and Ted Thompson wouldn't do it. Another big thing you will see from your favorite set of balls to sniff is he will blow another top 8 pick this year hell i won't be surprised to see him trade it for 2 2nd rounders lol.

TT= Matt Millen neither are good gms but get alot of free passes. Maybe Ted Thompson will draft another mediocre wr with our 1st pick like he did last year.

You know i respect your posts SOD im having a little fun with you because well thats just me lol.

BTW i'm working on season ticket holders on the Steeler game next year so maybe we can show these Steeler fans how to really Tailgate.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

I still think we're better than the Vikings. We got f-cked over big time in that game. Sadly, they will take our playoff spot... and lose in the first round.

That's downright hilarious, man. Do you talk to actual football fans very often? I was in a draft chat with dozens of hardcore fans from across the league and there was nothing but praise for the pick. Nelson has contributed as a rookie on a team with great #1/#2 WR's. Chicago Bears fans were IRATE that we took him.

You're free to have your opinion. I'll stick with mine, which has been steady since before he was named Executive of the Year by his peers.

Martha Careful (13h) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (14h) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
Martha Careful (6-May) : Happy 93rd Birthday to the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time...Willie Mays

buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
