Just asking...contractually, what happens if he sits? Do the Packers retain his rights, and if so for how long? Does he face the same situation in a year?

I think only to franchise tags back to back.

Why are people caught off guard with this? Most players don't want to play on the franchise tag. Look at what happened to Javon Walker. Now, granted he wasn't on the franchise tag, but he blew out his ACL and was never the same player. If Adams tears his ACL next season, then odds are strong he'll lose tens of millions of dollars. Yes, he's slated to get 20 million this season. However, he would garner $50 million guaranteed in bonuses on a long-term deal. This is a business decision for him as much as it is for the Packers.

Additionally, if the Packers do intend to move forward with Aaron Rodgers for the next 2 to 4 seasons, then locking up Adams on a third contract makes sense. Something along the lines of a 4 year extension would likely lower his cap hit for this year and reward him for being the greatest Packers WR since arguably Sterling Sharpe. He has shown little signs of slowing down and been an immensely healthy WR. I suspect he'll remain a the top of his game for at least 2 to 3 more years.

I believe Gutey mentioned in a press conference that they see the franchise tag as a bridge to get from Point A to Point B.

Point B is clearly a long-term contract extension agreement. I would be surprised if one doesn't happen between now and July.

Thankfully, he hasn't spoken like that at all. There have been some athletes who are like "I'm not holding out to hurt the team, you have to understand I have a family to support!" and I'm thinking, yeah, and $14 million isn't enough?

Anyhow, Davante Adams only issue is he wants to be the highest paid WR for his ego. He feels that's what he deserve because he feels there is no WR better than them and he wants to be paid accordingly. That's all it is. It's not about not having a enough money, it's not about the money, it's about the recognition that comes WITH the money. If that makes sense. I probably worded it crappy.

Basically, if the highest paid WR was getting $5 million a year, he'd be good with being paid $5.5 million per year. He just wants to be #1 paid WR.

I have no doubt the Packers will work it out with him after they create enough cap space.

The issue is what constitutes the highest paid player. Tae and his agent feel they need to look at what DeAndre Hopkins' AAV at $27.250 million as the benchmark. The Packers counter that that was a two season extension to an existing contract so the money was spread out and watered down. They feel Amari Cooper's cap hit of $22 million is a better indicator of a player's salary. Look at the whole thing and not just a slice of it.

Those were the 2021 numbers when negotiations began. Now for 2022, Hopkins' cap hit has increased to $25 + million. In a way by dragging his feet Adams has won part of the battle. The Packers can talk about $23 or $24 million being the benchmark. They have to push it to $26. And as long as you are there, why not go all the way to $27.5 or $28? I don't blame Adams for trying to get all he can. Once he is done, he is done. It's over.

Yes he can sit out for the year. They will do it all again next year but the numbers will be higher. Tae will be a year older and he will be more likely not to live up to the full potential of the contract. Both sides lose.

Last season I thought $25 million was fair. Every time a WR signs for more than that, it will push it further down the list.

WR are seriously getting overpaid, and I doubt nessarily mean the top WRs, but some #2 or #3 WRs are getting paid better than some #1s...

Which is also why we're seeing a number of WRs released from their contracts before they finish them..

So we might as well give Adams his $28 million or whatever it is, as a long term deal, as soon WRs will be getting over $30 million... it's coming soon.

There is so much money in sports these days it's hard for the average person to comprehend. (Can anyone say they really know what a trillion dollars is? It's just a number that we toss around. As an example it would take 1 billion $1000 bills to make a trillion. It really has no meaning.)

The same for players salaries. $20 million a year is obscene. $30 million even more so. There is that much money in the system. Only a fraction of it comes from the fans in the form of ticket prices. Jersey or other memorabilia. Over the years I have been a strong advocate for ownership in all sports. The system is broke. Even if Adams agreed to "only" $10 million a year it would not change the runaway prices.

So Adams says he won't play on the franchise tag? Name one WR/TE that did better after leaving Rodgers...Jennings? Jones? Cobb?
Nelson had an ok year with the Raiders, but nothing spectacular. Without #12 tossin him the ball, he will look very pedestrian.
