Two talented TEs on the field at the same time!

There are different versions of the Wide-Zone scheme and I've always thought LaFleur was most likely Kyle Shanahan's version (which should be no surprise after all, they only spent 8 years growing as coaches together).

But Shanahan's version has always used a lot more two TEs/FBs sets than the others one, and I think LaFleur would like to, but has never quite had the right pieces to do it.

Of course, if they stay healthy, the Packers have plenty of weapons, it's the OL that I'm more concerned with.

Tucker Kraft is back from injury and Matt LaFleur is eager to pair him with Luke Musgrave.

The Green Bay Packers  made an unusually large investment at tight end in 2023, selecting Oregon State ’s Luke Musgrave in the second round of the draft, then bringing in South Dakota State’s Tucker Kraft a round later. With both players heading into their second seasons in Green Bay, head coach Matt LaFleur is excited to see that investment pay off.

Tight end discussion took up a good deal of LaFleur’s media availability on Wednesday, and Kraft, who just returned from the Physically Unable to Perform list this week, was top of mind.

“I think he’s a complete tight end and I think he’s only scratching the surface of what he’s capable of doing,” LaFleur said.

Kraft got off to a rough start as a rookie; through the first month of the season, he never played more than 13 snaps in a game and frequently looking out of place as a blocker during the handful of reps that he did get. But the third-round pick blossomed down the stretch, filling in for Musgrave as he recovered from a lacerated kidney.

In the final seven games of the season, Kraft recorded 26 catches for 312 yards and two touchdowns, only playing fewer than 90% of the snaps in a given game once.

Now, LaFleur sees big things in store for Kraft, citing a “night and day” developmental difference between where Kraft was a year ago and where he is today. And perhaps the biggest reason for his optimism is Kraft’s partnership with Musgrave.

The two 2023 draft picks were rarely an effective duo last year, due mostly to Musgrave’s injury. But now that Kraft’s torn pectoral is behind him, LaFleur sees promising things ahead for his young tight ends.

“To have both of those guys at full strength I think can definitely change the complexion of our offense.”

The different skill sets Musgrave and Kraft possess is the best part of their partnership. Musgrave, perhaps the most athletic tight end in recent Packers history next to Jermichael Finley, has field-stretching speed, and that showed up in the way the Packers used him last year. He lined up in the slot or split wide on more than 49% of his passing snaps last season and recorded an average depth of target of 7.4 yards; 13 of Musgrave’s 45 targets last season (including playoffs) came at medium or deep distances, as charted by Pro Football Focus.

Kraft, meanwhile, profiles as a classic in-line tight end. He was in the slot or out wide for just 33% of his passing snaps last season and rarely saw downfield targets. According to PFF, just five of his 39 total targets in 2023 were at medium or deep distances, giving him an average depth of target of just 5.3 yards — the second-lowest figure among all Packers receivers and tight ends.

If the Packers can find ways to marry those two skill sets, they’ll have a truly dangerous duo on their hands. Couple that with a deep and talented group of wide receivers and an ascending quarterback, and it’s easy to see why LaFleur is excited about what’s in store for the Packers’ offense in 2024.

Zero2Cool (9h) : Commanders cut Cade York. Wasn't he the guy some of you wanted in GB?
Zero2Cool (17h) : my fantasy team is doodoo
Mucky Tundra (9-Sep) : Rams-Lions with an anticlimactic OT but smart football on the Lions part
Mucky Tundra (8-Sep) : oh i misread the cap hit, it's even more than that lol
Mucky Tundra (8-Sep) : *$145 million cap hit
Mucky Tundra (8-Sep) : you have to wonder at some point if the Browns bite the bullet, cut Watson and eat the $145 million dollar bullet
Martha Careful (8-Sep) : please note the qualification "by the end of the day"
Mucky Tundra (8-Sep) : They did actually! Didn't catch the score, get back to me in 10 hours ;)
Zero2Cool (8-Sep) : Lions already played and won?
Mucky Tundra (8-Sep) : But yeah, meet the new Bears QB, same as the old Bears QB
Mucky Tundra (8-Sep) : Also, sarcasm alert
Mucky Tundra (8-Sep) : Naw that was all Williams, his *aura* propelled that team
bboystyle (8-Sep) : more good news. Caleb looks worse than Fields
Martha Careful (8-Sep) : and the good news department, assuming he returns to good health. It would appear financially we probably got a good deal for Jordan Love
Martha Careful (8-Sep) : it looks like we will be in last place by ourselves by the end of the day
Mucky Tundra (8-Sep) : And now the Titans are self-destructing vs the Bears
Mucky Tundra (8-Sep) : Titans are cruising against the Bears
Martha Careful (8-Sep) : Good One Mucky,! I am going to use that!!!
Mucky Tundra (8-Sep) : Notre Dame? more like Notre Lame!
Martha Careful (8-Sep) : it was great to see Northern Illinois upset Notre Dame at Notre Dame
Mucky Tundra (7-Sep) : I mean, they traded for Willis after a year and a half of Clifford, seems pretty definitive
TheKanataThrilla (7-Sep) : Do we with Clifford or Willis? You'd think Clifford has a better knowledge of the playbook
Mucky Tundra (7-Sep) : Definitely filing that under the "I'm getting old" category
Mucky Tundra (7-Sep) : Donald Drivers son Christian caught a TD pass playing for the University of Minnesota today.
Zero2Cool (7-Sep) : Packers QB Jordan Love's initial timetable for return is in the 3-6 week range, per sources. And there's some early optimism he could return
Zero2Cool (7-Sep) : Initial tests indicated Jordan Love’s ACL is intact. But there’s a wide range of outcomes based on additional scans, which will occur when t
Zero2Cool (6-Sep) : QB Malik Willis will be the only backup tonight behind Jordan Love vs. the Eagles.
Zero2Cool (6-Sep) : Packers gotta take shot on first series of game.
Martha Careful (6-Sep) : Amen...just squeezing more juice out of the orange.
dfosterf (6-Sep) : The Peacock streaming thing is irritating. So many sports bars don't have Peacock, but often the person answering the phone will say they do
Zero2Cool (6-Sep) : So, today is game day??
Zero2Cool (6-Sep) : what?
Mucky Tundra (6-Sep) : Well speaking of shooting themselves in the foot
Mucky Tundra (6-Sep) : INT might be the jolt they need
Mucky Tundra (6-Sep) : Ravens shooting themselves in the foot
Zero2Cool (6-Sep) : Apple Pie. My favorite. Been a while
dfosterf (6-Sep) : Maybe pie still, but no whipped cream, ice cream or milk. Imstead, you get someone else's left over beer from yesterday to go with your pie
dfosterf (6-Sep) : Pie is good. You get no pie and fewer wins in fantasy due to being inflexible
Zero2Cool (5-Sep) : I like pie.
dfosterf (5-Sep) : Loved Gunnys. Never earned that particular rank. Neither did R Lee Armey from full metal jacket fame, but that is another story.
dfosterf (5-Sep) : He better be ready, willing, and able to kick everone's ass in a fight. My experience? They always are.
dfosterf (5-Sep) : Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeants are some of the baddest men on this earth. I was never one of those, fyi
