You could build a case in either direction.. it is subjective.

But I agree it is not rational to expect a QB to consistently pull the rabbit in the final minutes of a game..

But overall this team should have been able to collectively do it at least once.. the team failed and Rodgers played a part in the dynamic with declined play in the waning moments of the game.

Declined play comparatively to the rest of his game.

In the end.. this entire team needs to learn how to finish collectively.. TEAM.

Final scores of the games in which Aaron Rodgers tossed an INT in the last 5 minutes:

Opponent Score Pt Diff Driv Std Tm Int
Tampa Bay 30-21 -9 2:26 2:19
Atlanta 27-24 -3 7:19 4:42
Carolina 35-31 -4 1:30 1:19
Jacksonville 20-16 -4 1:56 0:46

A glance at the table above reveals that these drives started, on average, with 3:18 remaining. Moreover, that number is skewed by the Atlanta game; if we leave that game out, the average drops to 1:57. He threw the interceptions, on average, with 2:16 remaining; again leaving out the Atlanta game, that number drops to 1:28.

Bear in mind, too, that in each of these games except the Tampa Bay game, the Packers lead or were tied after the possession prior to the possession in which Rodgers threw the interception.

Regardless of what skeptics want to believe, you cannot rationally expect a quarterback to consistently win games when he is forced to come from behind in the final 2 minutes of a game. Statistics prove that these kind of last-minute comeback victories are in fact the aberration, not the rule. Favre himself only won about 25% of the games in which the Packers were tied or losing in the final 8 minutes of games. What frustrates me the most about this whole pointless conversation is we wouldn't even be having it had Favre not been lucky enough to make a huge impression on the desperate fans of Green Bay by coming from behind in his first game as a Packer.

Either way, the worst that can be said about Rodgers is that in 3 out of 10 losses this year (in all of which he had lead the Packers to a tie or lead in the prior possession), Rodgers threw an INT in the last 5 minutes and the margin of defeat was 4 points or less. In other words, it could be argued that in 30% of the losses this season, Rodgers' throwing an INT in the closing minutes sealed the team's defeat. That doesn't even take into consideration the fact that in the Atlanta game, on the very next drive, Rodgers threw a TD with 2:00 remaining to bring the team within 3.

Each of those losses was in a non-divisional game and thus had little or no impact on the playoff picture. Even if by some miracle, the Packers had scored a TD on each of those drives and won those games, they would have finished 9-7. End result: they would have watched the playoffs from home, same as the rest of us.

Forgive me if I happen not to hold those 3 interceptions against our first-year starter.

What I hope for next season is it won't come down to last-minute drives. I hope our offense won't go invisible in the 3rd quarter and we'll have our boots firmly on our opponents' necks by the time the 4th quarter rolls around. :D

No way will games be done in the 3rd or 4th quarter. The talent in the NFL is so close that it's not uncommon that about four games will be close in the final five minutes. That's football and that's parity.

You can't go 0-4 in the final minutes and get a free pass. Let me make it clear that I think it's ridiculous to say Aaron Rodgers is a bad player or he isn't the answer because of this problem, but you can't pretend that the problem isn't there. If you pretend there isn't a problem then the problem will occur over an over instead of getting fixed.

It is a team sport, but I don't need numbers to look at the throws Rodgers threw and know that they were awful decisions especially against Carolina and Jacksonville. They were bad decisions and he'll need to over come those types of decisions in those types of situations because ultimately come playoff time, he'll need to win the game in the final five minutes.

One thing I notice is that Packer fans are consistent. Criticism of Brett Favre and the way he played in 2005 and 2006 was met with similar responses.

Brett Favre had 22 come-from-behind-or-tie victories in the final 8:00 of games during his tenure in Green Bay, a little more than one per year. I'd be curious to see what his numbers were for inside 5:00 or 2:00.

I'm not excusing Aaron Rodgers' interceptions. I'm saying give him more than one season before proclaiming he "can't do it in the clutch." Brett Favre lucked out and came from behind on his first game, so he (unjustifiably in my opinion) gained a mythic reputation for these kinds of victories that now puts unrealistic expectations on his successor..

No one is giving Rodger's a pass for making some bad decisions in the final minutes of the game. However, many are being a bit lenient with him just because it was his FIRST YEAR starting. Holding him up to the same standards at this point to Brett Favre is just dumb really. A seasoned vet again a first year starter?? You have to cut the guy a LITTLE slack. It's comparing apples and oranges. I would expect the seasoned vet to play a little bit better in crunch time, because they have been there and done that and know how to handle it.

Now, if it continues next year, and even until the next, we can start those types of comparisons. Until then, it's pretty much lame.

Rodger's will be fine. I'm confident, and am very satisfied in what I saw of him in his FIRST YEAR STARTING. He'll only improve, in my opinion.

You know what? I don't even remember that game. Key games I think of when I think of Brett Favre are the '96 SB, the day after his father passed on, the Seattle win after being down 14-0 early in the 1st Q, etc.

When I think of come from behind wins, I think of John Elway, not Brett Favre, even though Brett Favre now owns the title (well, simply because Brett Favre played a lot more games).

This whole thread I'm seeing as football mental masturbation. The problem isn't Aaron Rodgers. It's our D needs to not allow so many points. When you score 419 points, you should not have a 6-10 record. We scored more points than the 13-3 Titans, and the Steelers who are representing the AFC in the upcoming SB. The Cards though have scored more points than we did.

If there is an issue with Rodgers, I put more the blame on MM. We get into the red zone then all of a sudden get all conservative instead of putting the game in Aaron's hands to put the score out of reach. If we had been doing that all along, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress

Zero2Cool (6-Aug) : I thought that was the Lions OL
Mucky Tundra (6-Aug) : Travis Glover placed on IR; seasons over for him
Zero2Cool (6-Aug) : found bad sql in database, maybe site faster now?
dfosterf (5-Aug) : I'm going to call that a good move.
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Packers sign CB Corey Ballentine
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : I'm not sure how to kill the draft order just yet so it's not so confusing.
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Keep in mind, we do a draft reorder once all members locked in
