Xavien Howard Deal Could Raise Bar for Packers & Jaire Alexander

It’s been reported that the Green Bay Packers and Jaire Alexander have been in contract extension talks since at least the NFL combine, if not sooner.

Alexander is currently on his fifth-year option for the 2022 season and comes with a $13.2 million cap hit as a result. Obviously, an extension will help keep one of the game’s top cornerbacks in Green Bay beyond this upcoming season, but it will also lower his 2022 cap hit as well–providing the Packers with some much-needed cap space.

We don’t know where the two sides are at in negotiations or if they are close to a deal or not, but it was assumed that Alexander was going to surpass Jalen Ramsey’s $20 million per year deal, thus making Alexander the highest-paid cornerback in football–something he has certainly earned.

However, there may have been a wrench thrown into those plans on Friday evening. Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard had three years left on his contract, but that has been replaced by a new five-year deal with $50.69 million in new money and totals $90 million over the life of the contract.

If we lose Jaire Alexander because of the Dolphins handing out this contract, I'm burning Miami to the ground.

Don't get me wrong, Alexander is one of the top 32 CBs and probably one of the top 16 CBs when fully healthy, but #1? 🤔

He was truely elite (top 5 and maybe competing for #1), but I think that was one season, and he has that potential to be truely elite, but most seasons he's just been great (top 16 or top 10), but not elite.

If he demands #1 in the NFL money, I might have to take a look at other options, especially now that we got Stokes and Douglas locked up for the next 3 years.

If he wants bottom range of the top 5, I'd probably do that, as contracts rotate and some will pass him in time.

Just to give some idea of CB contract ranges, average per season

#1 $20 million
#3 $19.5
#4 18
#5 17.25
#7 and #8 16.5
#10 14.5

I got no problem putting him in the top 10, maybe even the bottom of the top 5. But above #1? IMO he just hasn't quite proved he's worth that yet.

Pay the man. He’ll only the highest paid until the next top ten corner signs his contract. Russ will structure the contract so it is forward looking and not too onerous.

Elite 25% of the time, doesn't equal top contract in the NFL to me. And most of those top CB contracts were recently sign since 2000 and are like 5 years.

Now, maybe with the TV revenue jump in the cap, maybe doing a really long term (over 4 years) might get him some more.

But we could lose h to another season ending shoulder injury.

I'm cool with paying him A LOT, but not #1 in NFL, not yet, until he has another elite season or stays healthy at least.

I'd sign him a 2-3 year guaranteed deal that's putting him around 5-10 CB in league. Let him cash in with the new money tv deal

And with the loss of players on offense, taking pressure off them could be huge.
