I never liked the fact that the Packers went ahead and extended Rodgers two years early, but after last night's (a)pathetic performance, I'm positively pissed about it. Rodgers was coming off a season-ending injury. Gutekunst should have waited to see if Rodgers could still perform at a high level. But the situation is further complicated by the fact that it's becoming increasingly probable that Mike McCarthy will be shown the door at the end of this season (he's too stubborn to step down, after all). Gutekunst should have forced Rodgers to prove himself for a year in the new coach's system before opening his pocketbook. Obviously, it's impossible to make sweeping judgments right now because Rodgers is grappling with yet another significant injury, yet we nevertheless have to contemplate the possibility that the Packers just made a man who's past his prime the highest-paid player in history, and we're not seeing performance anywhere close to commensurate with that lofty level of compensation.
