This is just another fail on the part of TT. Why didn't they just throw a few bucks at Spiller? Or better yet, draft another back. Starks is over 30, and Eddie Lacy has his weight, asthma, and injury issues. And to make matters worse, no third running back. I just don't understand the thinking at 1265 Lombardi Avenue sometimes, but I guess I don't need to.

Defense will probably need to carry this one.

The problem with WRs pretending to be RBs is they have to be fast enough to get outside but unless the D completely fails to have someone in contain the WR can't get outside far enough to use his speed. They certainly are not strong enough to
run inside
and break a couple of tackles.

I'm thinking Montgomery gets a healthy amount of reps at Rb. They tried it last year against the chargers before he got hurt and he wasn't half bad. With Cobb being a little banged up I think they keep him in the slot.

I wouldn't mind a real RB averaging 4.7 per carry but not a WR. A RB will get 20 carries a game. A WR will get 1-3 carries unless they are running a Wildcat offense.

Total for his career- 5 carries 14 yards long of 9 avg 2.8

A WR at RB is more of a gimmick play than anything. You need to get some decent yards in order to consider it successful. The speed of the defensive players is too great for it to work on a consistent basis. It has worked once for Ty out of 5 tries. The 4 plays that didn't work netted GB a whopping 5 yards. You need more than 1 yard a carry for it to be worth using. Many of the better RBs FALL FORWARD for an additional 3 yards after they have been hit.

I am not trying to compare the WRs to Lacy but how many times has Lacy been hit in the backfield, again at or just over the LOS and he still gets 5 or 6 yards? You won't see that from 99% of the WRs who are playing RB.

He's a natural ballcarrier he can make people miss and break tackles, it's partly why they wanted him to return kicks. I understand people's doubts but he's a better option than you give him credit.

Re: Montgomery: If we're not going to use him in the passing game, why not? If he goes down because he's made of glass... Again, not using him anyways. Would much rather lose him than Cobb, and I like Montgomery and had high hopes for him.

The sample size of 5 carries says nothing too. We've seen him carry the football and take on tackles with power as a WR and returner though. Maybe he will work out maybe he won't but at this point we have no clue.

Is Christian Ringo really that irreplaceable that we couldn't cut him for a week until after Thursday's game against the Bears and bring Don Jackson up until these other guys get healthy?

They'll have 10 days of rest after that.

Everybody worried about # of RBs like McCarthy would commit to a running game even if we had 5 healthy pro bowlers at the position.
