I guess what I'm saying is this: Saying you're "good enough" is a recipe for mediocrity, even if you are at the top of the pile. And Green Bay isn't at the top of the pile.
I'm really worried if our GM is operating as if he doesn't need to do what we can to upgrade starters at several positions on this team, including, especially, ILB, CB, DT, and TE. I'm not saying he has to draft entirely by need, and I'm not saying he's going to be able to get the improvement at all the positions.
But I am saying that he *should not* go into this draft and say "we don't need a new starter or three coming out of this draft.
Because *all* of the following will *not* happen:
1. Quarless performs as a "top echelon" TE.
2. The defense becomes "Barrington's Team".
3. B J Raji becomes the force for a full year that he was for half a year in 2010.
4. Heyward or Hyde become a shut-down corner.
5. Nick Perry becomes a stud.
6. Datone Jones becomes a week-in, week-out stud.
7. Richard Rodgers becomes a week-in, week-out stud.
8. Bahktiari becomes a dominant LT.
And because, absent new personnel from this draft, *some* of the following *will* happen.
1. Our current TEs will perform somewhere between "mediocre" and "serviceable." Just like 2014.
2. Our ILBs will perform somewhere between "mediocre" and "good" when CM3 plays inside and somewhere between "bad" and "serviceable" when he doesn't. Just like 2014.
3. Our NT will perform somewhere between "mediocre" and "serviceable." Just like 2014.
4. Our DBs will perform somewhere between "mediocre" and "serviceable." Just like 2014, or worse.
5. Our DL/OLB not called Peppers/CM3/Daniels will perform somewhere between "mediocre" and "barely OK". Just like 2014, or worse.
6. Some teams like Detroit, Dallas, Seattle, San Francisco, New Orleans, Philadelphia, et al will improve relative to GB.
7. GB will do no better than it did last year playoff-wisie.
8. And more likely will do worse.
Fans can go ahead and be optimistic about the current team making all the improvements necessary to make the team better relative to its competition than it was last year.
Ted cannot.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
