I dont have to get on board until he proves he can make this a winning team lol. He had a decent year but i dont base 1 year on how good of a qb is after all Derrick Anderson i believe was an all pro last year and this year he was benched.

"macbob" wrote:

Aaron Rodgers isn't Derrick Anderson. Aaron Rodgers proved he could play at a high level against higher competition as he put up good numbers against Minnesota in week one, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Chicago, and even Carolina.

Derrick Anderson played good against the bad teams and bad against the good teams in 2007. Then near the end of the year he stunk.

I do agree that Aaron Rodgers is not good in the final five minutes and I also saw what you saw on TV. That doesn't mean he can't be though and Rodgers biggest problem is once he stops thinking about everything and starts playing, he'll win close games.

I think he pressed at the end of the game, trying to live up to his predecessor's legacy. As he gets to the point where he's looking over his shoulder less I expect that will change. And speaking of shoulders, keep in mind he did all this after almost separating his shoulder (if he didn't actually separate it).

"dhazer" wrote:

I don't think he had a CHOICE but to press in a lot of those games and the passer rating is distorted to a degree because in many games he was asked to come in with less then 2 minutes left and one or no timeouts.

So while the stat is what it is it includes all the desperation drives that hardly any QB could pull off.

I would also like to add something about the lack of 4th quarter comebacks. In many cases where I see late comebacks the MOMENTUM had come back to the team needing that last score. Many times that team had scored previous to getting the ball one last time and the DEFENSE DID IT's PART to give them another chance.

In the case of the Packers this year ARod often did his part earlier in the 4th quarter when they had the ball but the opposing team would then march down the field and put the winning points on the board leaving little time for the Packers to pull out a win and the MO was with the opposing team.

Watching Philly and Arizona yesterday the Eagles came back and got on top but when the Cardinals ANSWERED the MOMENTUM switched and Philly could not pull it out(and they had as much time as Arod often was given too).

I suppose it is also Arod's fault that in almost every failed 4th quarter comeback the defense failed to hold and the momentum was with the other team.

+1 for your whole post, but the part I quoted above is the most important part, IMO.

Now, to be fair, I think that we do need to see some improvement in late-game desperation situations - it's an important part of a QB's overall game.

BUT, in a lot of games last year Rodgers got the team down to score and take the lead, only to have the defense fold and allow the other team to take the lead, leaving Rodgers < 2 minutes to do it all over again. We all watched the games, so we all remember this trend.

Did he manage to pull it off? No, he didn't. And it's true that if he had, we might have won a few more games. But I do think that we have to include the rest of the 4th quarter and the play of the rest of the team if we're going to discuss the thing reasonably. He didn't get the job done in those situations this year, but the play of the rest of the team made those situations incredibly tough (insert previous discussions showing that guys like Elway and Favre failed in similar situations far more often than they succeeded here).

Bottom line: He's a good young quarterback who's got potential to improve.

I think these frequently overlooked facts are simply stunning, so I am going to quote them again here:

[ol]🇱🇮The only time Favre had that few turnovers was his rookie year, when he took five snaps and still managed two picks. [/li]
🇱🇮Favre only had more touchdowns in only five of his 18 seasons (1994-'97, 2001). He also had a better TD:turnover ratio only in his three MVP seasons (1995-1997).[/li]
🇱🇮Favre's completion percentage was better than Rodgers only four times: 2003, 2004, and 2007 with the Packers, and 2008 with the Jets.[/li]
🇱🇮Rodgers yardage totals are better than all but four of Favre's 18 seasons: 1995 (4377!), 1998 (4122), 2007 (4074), and 2004 (4031); even Favre's yards per play were only better in three additional seasons (1997, 2001, and 2003).[/li]
🇱🇮Favre only had a better passer rating than Rodgers four times, in 1995 (99.5), 1996 (95.8), 2001 (94.1), and 2007 (95.7).[/li][/ol]

By those numbers, Rodgers had an MVP-caliber season his first year as a starter!

I read a quote on PackersUpdate.com that said while NFL scouts project Rodgers to have more postseason success than Favre had, they also believe that even were that to happen, Rodgers will never attain the same iconic status in Green Bay that Favre enjoyed. I was appalled to read that Packers fans have this kind of reputation around the league.

If this happens -- if the Packers win, say, two or three Super Bowls with Rodgers at the helm -- and fans still fail to give him the same level of adulation they gave Favre, as much as it pains me to say this, I would seriously be tempted to hang up the spurs and find another team with a group of fans more worthy of the name.

Of course, I can't believe this will happen. They say time heals all wounds. I have to think a couple of items of shiny finger jewelry would do the same.

I never would either, GPG. As I said, it would be a temptation born of frustration with moronic fans.

One that would instantly be squashed in revulsion at the mere thought of rooting for another team. :pukeright:

First, I love Rodgers and I think he's going to be a great QB for years to come. Second, Favre and Rodgers' situations are different. I can see where Rodgers could equal or surpass Favre's record and still not receive

the same level of adulation they gave Favre.

Favre was Moses--led the Pack out of 30 YEARS mediocrity (at best) to the first Superbowl appearance, and win, in (I can't emphasize this enough) 30 long, stinking, lousy YEARS! Just thinking about it...John Hadl...oooh...Jim McMahon...oooh...William "the Refrigerator" Perry...oooh...

Sorry about that. Anyway, Rodgers is taking over the QB helm of a franchise that's had only two losing seasons in the last 17 years.

Also, part of the adulation for Favre was his reputation of wearing his heart on his sleeve--unfortunately, with some of the attendant fanfare that went with that (annual musings on retirement, etc). Favre was seen as giving his all to the fans.

Rodgers will have a tightrope to walk if he's to achieve a similar level of rapport with the fans without the attendant fanfare.

So because Rodgers' personality is different, fans will hold that against him?

That makes no sense to me whatsoever. All I care about is results on the field. Tears during postgame press conferences don't move me in the least.

Also, while it doesn't diminish in any way his contribution to this team, never forget that Brett Favre was the beneficiary of being in the right place at the right time. From the highlights I've seen of Don Majkowski's performance on the field, I think it's entirely possible that had he not gone down with an untimely injury, he would have been the new Moses. Ron Wolf was already in the process of building a firm foundation for Green Bay's success.

Incidentally, as dhazer pointed out to me, Aaron Rodgers' style is eerily reminiscent of Majik's.

And I don't know that he should, or would want it. macbob put it well; Favre is seen (rightly, IMO) as the guy that led the team out of three decades of mediocrity. Rodgers - going with your scenario - would (should) be viewed as a great QB who achieved something different; succeeding a legend of Favre's stature and being very succesful in doing so.

If I were to throw poorly-considered comparisons against a wall (and that's the kind of guy I am), I'd offer up San Fran and maybe the Colts in comparison. San Fran's a better one; Montana was the savior and Young was the guy who came in and managed to continue the success. I'm only guessing because I'm not a Niners fan, but from my outsider's perspective it doesn't seem like Young's legend eclipsed Montana's, more like it stands on its own.

If I'm Aaron, I'd prefer it that way, to be honest.

Rodgers had a great season.. no doubt. Every indicator seems to point upwards which is even better.

But before we speak of multiple Superbowls and MVP seasons... lets follow it up with another highly productive season with improvements in key areas.

Wins being first and foremost, and a little better end of game production.

BTW... I have bought into Rodgers.. he is our current starting QB... just as I will support the one that follows him.
