Tony Romo:

354th in the NFL in holding ability
2nd in choking after choking (1st is Jay Cutler)

If Rodgers dismantles the Lions and the Boys at home then he is a serious candidate. But given his calf injury I wouldn't bet on that and I agree this year the MVP title will probably be given to somebody else.

Romo's also got a better running game behind him and his offense puts up less points than Rodgers' does. Their effeciency is close but Rodgers is more impressive because he's got a higher volume and is more of the focus of his teams offense.

It's not a statistical contest. It's about who's more important to their team.

Besides everybody knows Gomer Pyle is overrated.

That said, the award rarely goes to a defensive player because a single defensive player rarely has the impact on a game that a QB or RB does. Which of course is slightly skewed since the QB and especially RB are greatly affected by other positions, like the O-Line, as it is in the case of Dallas.

Great points from all posters above and set forth herein.

Zero is right. You are all right.

The challenge is "The defining criteria to win the NFL MVP. It is most valuable player to his team. It is messed up, look it up."

I may be wrong and often am... However I feel.. The solution is very simple... An Award titled.. "Most Outstanding Player Overall."

I feel the NFL is hesitant to throw that award in the mix, because it may diminish all of the previous MVP award winners of the past.

We can only look, at this time, as to who is the MVP based on the criteria set forth for the voters THIS YEAR.. In that case, It is indeed, Aaron Rodgers, and not J.J.

Aaron Rodgers will be the 2014 NFL MVP.

That will indeed piss off many football fans and even former players. Especially former NFL QB's living in the State Of Mississippi.

The way I look at it, if there's any consistency, it won't be Romo.

I think Romo is underrated, as much as the QB in my example is overrated... But the former is looking better than he is, much like the latter has always been a good, but not great, player, which was always masked by his supporting cast.

I think that's one of the big reasons Aikman never won an MVP award.

During Aikman's best years, it was still that O-line, Irvin and, this pains me to admit, Smith, who made that team work.

Very much like Murray, Bryant and the O-line are doing that in Dallas right now.

Romo is better than Aikman, if you ask me, but he won't carry that team.

Guys like Steve Young, Brett Favre and Barry Sanders did at that point... Which is why they did win an MVP award.

I think Murray is still making a pretty strong case for himself, as well. Watt takes over games at a position that doesn't let you do that all that easily. He returend an int for a TD, catches passes as a TE... If there was ever a time to make a statement and put a defensive player up for MVP, this would be it.

If he has an impactful game, the Chiefs win, the Browns win and the Texans sneak into the play-offs, I bet he gets it. Otherwise, I'm not so sure, but he'll be in the mix.

Then there's Gronk, Brady... And we're lucky that Beckham didn't get that many opportunities at the start of the year.

That said, I still think Rodgers has a big chance to win it. How he plays in this game is going to be very important. If he comes out, is ruthlessly efficient and decimates the Lions, I think he'll win it. If he'll come out and have just a decent game, it'll go to someone else.

JJ Watt certainly didn't hurt his chances today...What a Game. He is a special talent that could just break the offensive player MVP winning Streak.

It should be MVP as in who is having best season in the NFL regardless of position. And that is J.J. Watt.

Uh, yes Rodgers is having the best year among QBs. 38 TD and 5 INTs is the best in the league.

But yes, Watt deserves it more. He ain't ever having that statline again.

Can JJ Watt truly be the MVP as the leader of the 16th overall defense in yards per game, 7th overall in points per game, 22nd overall pass defense, tied for 16th in sacks, and 10th in rushing yards? I won't be so easily convinced. It's a great debate. But from my perspective, Rodgers has been much more valuable and integral to the objective of playing the game: regular season success that leads to a playoff berth. The point of the game isn't to get sacks, catch a few touchdown passes, and recover a few fumbles. It's about winning games to make the playoffs, and Rodgers has done more in that regard than Watt.

Also, JJ Watt doesn't even have the most sacks in the league. He finished 1.5 sacks behind Justin Houston (whom if I remember correctly, the Packers could and should have drafted). Justin Houston is also tied with Watt four forced fumbles with four.

JJ Watt is undoubtedly the best defensive player in the league. But I just can't see how he could the most valuable player. It would be much more convincing if the Texans had a dominant defense and were at least a wildcard team, but they are not. He is the MVP of the Texans, but not quite the league, imo. I wouldn't be that disappointed if Aaron Rodgers doesn't win it, because then I won't have to listen to so many people crying about their guy not winning it, but Rodgers is the most valuable player on a contending team. It's not a very difficult decision to me.
