The Packers, under the illustrious leadership of GM/HC Mike "I'm hung like a field mouse for not going for that 4th and 1 vs the Eagles" Sherman, selected Ahmad Carroll and thus started the Draft from Hell.

Was 2004 Packers' Worst Draft Ever?

How Sherman wasn't fired the moment he moved up in the 3rd round to take a punter who couldn't punt is beyond me.

The 2004 draft should also be remembered as the one where Sherman traded up at the end of the third round to grab Ohio State punter B.J. Sander

Clemson defensive tackle Donnell Washington, which Sherman also traded up to get, was picked at No. 72.

Whoever trades up to get a player is a moron. Oh wait that is a different thread. nm

In the modern NFL I have not liked it when the HC is also the GM. When they gave the job to Sherman I knew it would not be long before he was let go.

I can remember every single insult I created at that time.

Ahmad Carroll, Joey Thomas and then trade up for BJ Sander.

It's a serious candidate for worst draft in the universe.

I'm not defending Sherman here, but put the damn blame for the whole siyuation where it belongs, The Packer Upper Management, who decide that 1 person could be GM/HC.

Hell the reason Holmgren left was because he wanted more control and The Packers refused to give it to him, then they turn around and name Sherman GM/HC a year after naming him HC.

That was the great failed experiment that was going around The NFL at the time.

Let's not forget Mike McKenzie playing Diva and refusing to play, forcing Sherman to reach for Carrol and then Joey Thomas.

Let's not forget that injuries, and McKenzie's actions forced Carrol and Thomas into the starting rotation as rookies, WAY BEFORE THEY WERE READY.

Someone explain to me why Ted Thompson gave Sherman a 2 year extension on his contract 3 months before firing him?

Was that a "sorry Mike, The Packers really put the screws to you" parting gift?

Sherman wasn't a very good GM, but looking back after 10 years, it's easy to now say he was doomed to fail from the 1st day he was given the duel position, because NFL Teams now realize 2 men are needed.

Obviously they need to work very closely with each other but it is very difficult to do both. At least do both effectively.

I'd be remiss if this picture didn't work its way into this thread (Granted it was from the 05 combine I think)

Wolf fucked up by hiring Ray Rhodes as HC. Well. He fucked up by lying to Holmgren about the job offer in Seattle. That's why Holmgren tanked the SB against the Broncos and bailed from GB.

Then Wolf hired Rhodes as replacement, without even an interview. This actually goes against what Wolf recommends in his book on management. Wolf thought highly of Rhodes, and justifiably so. PROBLEM. Rhodes had been in therapy. Years earlier, when coaching in Philly, Rhodes was quoted in the paper saying, "When you get beat at home, it's like someone breaking into your house and sodomizing your family in front of you." LOL.

Everyone freaked out. IT'S JUST A GAME RAY. So they made him get his head shrunk. After that, he was a 9 to 5er. Was never the same as a coach.

So Rhodes basically put the team in Favre's hands. When Rhodes was shitcanned after 1 year, no one with a resume would touch that job with a ten foot pole. So Wolf hired Sherman as HC. Had to reach a bit, because Sherman wasn't ready yet at the time. He'd grow into the job, but not before Wolf himself decided to hang it up.

At that point, you had to give Sherman at least another year or two. But if they brought in an outside GM, Sherman would have been sacked for sure.

Ted gave Sherman an extra year or two just as a "vote of confidence." Sherman wouldn't talk to or look at Ted, because his ego was too bruised. Had to go.
