This year, more than in the past...I see Packers fans getting more upset about Ted not making any moves in free agency. Clearly, its because we have all witnessed how poor this defense has played the past couple of seasons coupled with the cap increase and the Packers having $33 million available. While we have plenty of our own players to sign (still yet to happen aside from Shields and it will happen with a few others) I thought it was important that Ted and Co. at least go out and grab one *star* player, preferably at safety, to shape this defense up.

...that was until I saw how ridiculous some of these contracts were. Ted doesn't play this game and as a fan, I am happy he doesn't. Some of these teams are strapping themselves down (in the future) because of 1-2 players. Saints signed Byrd to a contract for 6 years and while this year might not have an affect, the upcoming years certainly will.

The only contract that has made me slightly upset so far is the TJ Ward/Broncos contract. Imo, that would have been an absolute steal and helped the Packers immensely at the safety position. 4 years/$23 million, $14 million guaranteed. Maybe the guaranteed money is a bit high but sometimes you have to make that move for a player like that, at that price (compared to what other players are getting). He's young, injury free and can play the position well.

I do agree though with the OP. I like that Ted is sticking to his guns and especially since this is one of the deepest drafts in awhile. There's a good chance we are able to re-sign some of our guys for a little cheaper than they used to be and pick up a couple of day 1 starters in the draft in rounds 1-3.

Now, bad defense. (Not the first year for that though). Fans clamoring to sign old, injured, expensive Free Agents. Ted Thompson doesn't budge. Man, I am excited for the draft!!!

I've never been a huge fan of the megadeal free agency. I won't complain over some starter level competition signings though at reasonable prices. I think you have to rely on the draft to get your playmakers and such. If we just had some good health for once everything would be fine lol.

How much is reasonable to spend to repair a cracked windshield on a car with a blown engine?

When did we see the best Safety play in recent years? Was it coincidentally when our DL was the best? Is Jairus Byrd so good that he can provide pass coverage for 3,4, 5+ seconds? And step up to make TFL on every running play?

We are potentially losing 3 DL that accounted for 40 of the possible 48 starts in 2013. And they weren't very good starts. Who is going to step up and log those starts? That is way more important to me than blowing big money on a S. No S can cover up for bad DL play.

If we don't go out and spend some money in FA, what are we going to do with it? Even with Shields done. We have tons of space and along with the new CBA came a minimum cap. There is an amount of cap money we must spend. We could get ahead and do both Nelson and Cobb this year, but that will just leave us with huge cap space next year to deal with again.

We need a pass rush and there is far from a guarantee that what we have will be able to get that done. Would live for Matthews to come back 100% of what he was in the past, love for Perry and the rest to turn in to beasts on the line. But I'm not willing to bet the house on it (and it aint even a great house).

Just don't see inhouse players to justify getting paid enough to eat our cap space.

If this draft does not rock. I think the D is in for another crap year.

Too many holes.

Too many players not producing.

Ted and staff simply haven't been drafting good enough lately to only rely on the draft. He had better have a GREAT draft class this year, and have multiple young players take the next step. It's certainly possible, but it would make me nervous as a GM.

There’s a big gap between going on a free-agent spending spree and just boycotting the process altogether, which is what the Packers have done for the last several off-seasons. Personally, I’d prefer the Packers to settle in the middle.

dfosterf (1h) : OTC has increased Packers cap room to over 32 mil
Martha Careful (2h) : RIP Junior Bridgeman. An excellent businessman and NBA er
Zero2Cool (4h) : It's better to have $17m to use on players who will be on the field. That's why trade/release is talked
Zero2Cool (4h) : post june is $7m cap hit with $17m saving
Zero2Cool (4h) : oops meant $10m cap hit
Zero2Cool (4h) : And pre june is $10m savings
Zero2Cool (4h) : Can't make him play.
dhazer (5h) : I am curious why the big need to release Jaire, we have 29 million cap space we arent spending and would only gain $6 million/ make him play
Zero2Cool (6h) : Joey Bosa signed with Bills?
dfosterf (6h) : What they are offering is a left over case of Leinies from the Chippewa Falls plant
Zero2Cool (6h) : 27, 59, 91, 129 gets you Jaire and our 3rd
Zero2Cool (6h) : they give us those five, or even first four, they can have Jaire.
Zero2Cool (6h) : 27, 59, 91, 129 and 136 are only ones worth having of theirs.
dfosterf (6h) : What they don't have is cap space, at least presently at 5.6 mil
dfosterf (6h) : Poor bastards only have 11
Zero2Cool (6h) : Ravens ain't got crap for picks.
Zero2Cool (6h) : Aaron Rodgers is choosing between Steelers and Giants. The Vikings are officially out on him, per RapSheet
dfosterf (7h) : Current cap space 29.6 million.
dfosterf (7h) : Hobbs 2025 cap hit just under 6 million. Banks 2025 cap hit just over 9 million
Mucky Tundra (14h) : beast, this is news to me! Tell me more about these, "draft picks." They seem mighty mysterious! 😉
beast (15h) : Yes, the Ravens have draft picks
dfosterf (16h) : Good luck to him.
Zero2Cool (18h) : Eric Stokes signs with Raiders
Martha Careful (19h) : Tyler Linderbaum C
Mucky Tundra (19h) : Cap space?
Zero2Cool (19h) : Do Ravens have anything we'd even entertain to have?
Mucky Tundra (21h) : I've seen trade ideas of Jaire going to the Ravens all offseason
beast (22h) : A probably false rumor is suggesting CB Jaire Alexander is being traded to the Ravens, again probably false
beast (22h) : Commanders might have a dominant offense the next 3 years at least
Zero2Cool (11-Mar) : San Francisco 49ers announced they have released DL Leonard Floyd.
Mucky Tundra (11-Mar) : Er getting traded twice like that
Mucky Tundra (11-Mar) : Huh, LT Laremy Tunsil traded from Houston to Washington. Never heard of a top OT getting traded in his career like that
Martha Careful (11-Mar) : Minnesota Vikings cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. is returning on a three-year, $66 million deal
Zero2Cool (11-Mar) : Damn
Martha Careful (11-Mar) : Saints are re-signing DE Chase Young to a three-year, $51 million deal worth up to $57 million.
Martha Careful (11-Mar) : 49ers releasing FB Juszcyk any interest?
Zero2Cool (11-Mar) : digits of four
Zero2Cool (11-Mar) : four digits
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : Eh, don't think so. better to split
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : on new site, would Fan Shout and GameDay Chat show same messages?
Mucky Tundra (10-Mar) : The Hall of Fame stuff probably came from a scout as Zero said; at this point though it's hard to see them moving ZT from RT
Mucky Tundra (10-Mar) : Regarding ZT at C, Gute had said he felt C was ZTs best position after he was drafted.
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : LB Oren Burks to sign a 2-year, $5M deal with the Bengals.
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : Based on how it was worded at the time, probably scout.
beast (10-Mar) : I don't think the media person ever told the public the source, but Gute or LaFleur did say they thought Tom has earned his spot at OT
beast (10-Mar) : I think it was supposedly unnamed Packers source
buckeyepackfan (10-Mar) : Was that Gute or Lefleur or someone else?
buckeyepackfan (10-Mar) : Zach Tom could be a really good guard, an all pro tackle, but probably be a HOF Center. Who said that?
