GREEN BAY, Wis. -- As we head toward the NFL scouting combine, which starts Wednesday in Indianapolis, it's a good time to look at the Green Bay Packers' greatest needs this offseason and which prospects general manager Ted Thompson might be taking a closer look at during workouts and interviews this week.

Which position is the greatest need could be debated, but there's no arguing that it's on the defensive side of the ball.

That's it? I found myself looking for Page 2.

Safety is a position where a rookie often takes longer to excell. Whoever we get is almost sure to start, and it's basically a crapshoot whether the guy would be great in his first year no matter how good a player he is. I'd much rather we grab a Safety in free agency, and use the first two draft picks for LBs.

I think they need to add several good candidates for the Safety positions. Let the best tandem win.

Just get either Byrd or Ward in free agency, and pair him with Burnett. That will solve the problem.

Statistically speaking we should try to stockpile as many 2nd round picks as possible.
Our 2nd rounders are usually better than the 1st rounders.

This way we could probably get a decent safety, DLmen, and then maybe a Wideout or Tightend. This seems like one of those years that Teddy might go back to the round 2 WR well.

We are solid in the D-Line right now - Daniels, Worthy, D. Jones, Boyd, and Jolly.

Safety would best be addressed in free agency because of the need for immediate improvement - which wouldn't be guaranteed even by one of the top Safeties mentioned in the article. Do that, then use the top two picks to get the best ILB and OLB available.
