A roundup of what's happening on the Green Bay Packers' beat.

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- All NFL players are not created equal.

And they're not treated equally, either.

Take Mason Crosby and Jeremy Ross, for example.

The Packers stuck with Crosby even after the kicker experienced the worst season of his career in 2012, and their patience with him paid off. With three games remaining, he's on pace for his best season.

In explaining why the Packers didn't give up on Crosby, special teams coach Shawn Slocum on Monday said: "The easy thing to do is to change personnel.

It is an interesting question, but Ross had fumbled away too many important returns for the team to completely trust him. He moves to another team and the pressure is kind of off in some respects. Now the kid is doing well with DET.

Mason Crosby was a proven commodity, who fell on a bad year. He was given a chance to come back and he did. Ross was never a proven commodity. I could easily see why he was let go, given his high profile drops.

The article would mean a lot more to me if the author cited his previous article that called cutting Ross a mistake. Instead it is a lazy hindsight article. I like how there is an abundance of sports articles now available online, but they come at the cost of quality, both in terms of length and of effort choosing and developing the subject

Let's not forget that financially it made much more sense to try and rectify the issues with Crosby given his cap hit. There was very little incentive to continue to hope that Ross would get better when we had other guys on the roster that we felt could fill the spot.

Ross is shaky when the pressure is on. He's got return skills, but doesn't maximize that at the WR position. I don't trust him in the playoffs. Detoilet is welcome to him.

I still don't think it was a mistake. Holy Shit I am defending Ted Thompson lol. Ross played a position where he wasn't really going to get on the field except for Special Teams and he was failing that big time. So like I said it wasn't a mistake.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

First off - Crosby hasn't been shitting the bed since day one.
In Ross' case, he literally dropped the ball many times - some of those moments were game changers.

At what what point do you stop giving chances? Just because he has been good so far for the Lions does not mean he would be doing the same for us. I think many are overlooking the fact that getting cut could have lit a fire under him.

There are a lot of things that may have changed his play and attitude. He was cut for good reason, and I won't lie for a moment and say I didn't support the idea. It may also be a fluke and he returns to his fumbling ways.

Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Now that's a thought, maybe they're looking at the college ranks? Maybe not head coaches but DC/assistant DCs with league experience?
beast (30-Jan) : College Coaches wouldn't want that publicly, as it would hurt recruiting and they might not get the job.
beast (30-Jan) : I thought they were supposed to publicly announce them, at least the NFL ones. Hafley was from college, so I believe different rules.
Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Who knows who they're interviewing? I mean, nobody knew about Hafley and then out of nowhere he was hired
beast (30-Jan) : I wonder what's taking so long with hiring a DL coach, 2 of the 3 known to interview have already been hired elsewhere.

Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
