Jets, Giants make Bowl bid official

In making a bid to host the 2014 Super Bowl at New Meadowlands Stadium, the Jets and Giants are embracing the weather. It will be cold in New Jersey in February, but the teams contend that's not a reason to reject the bid.

"As I look outside we could not have gotten more perfect weather," said New Meadowlands Stadium Company CEO Mark Lamping. "Obviously weather will be a big part of the debate."

Team owners and notable players were at the site on a cold and rainy Wednesday to formally announce the bid. With half of the dismantled Giants Stadium looming next door, Lamping touted the indoor spaces for those who have the good seats in the 82,500-seat arena. The facility would have heated concourses and fans would be given handwarmers.

"One thing we know how to do in New York and New Jersey is deal with snow," Jets owner Woody Johnson said.

Mark Sanchez, Curtis Martin and Nick Mangold joined Johnson for the Jets, with Eli Manning and Ottis Anderson standing by Giants owners Steve Tisch and John Mara.

"Over the last four or five years of our partnership, we have made I don't know how many decisions and we have agreed on 99 percent of them," Mara said, adding that he gets tired of hearing about the problems they've had working together. The stadium, he said, was a testament to the Jets' and Giants' ownerships' ability to work together.

The bid will arrive at NFL offices Wednesday afternoon, and team owners will vote on May 25 at the NFL owners meeting. Tampa and Miami are the other two potential sites, and both have hosted Super Bowls in the last two years.

"A New York/New Jersey Super Bowl will be unlike any other," Lamping said.

Two of the next three Super Bowls are to be held in relatively new stadiums, in Dallas this season and Indianapolis in 2012. Lamping said that the New Meadowlands' digital scoreboards and the stadium's ability to change its colors, needed to host both Jets and Giants home games, would allow the NFL and Super Bowl teams to brand the building and have a home team feel. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has been supportive of the bid.

"Sports fans and especially football fans are not intimidated by weather," said Lamping, who later referenced the many tourists to Rockefeller Center in late fall and winter.

He noted that the AFC and NFC championship games can be played in any weather.

"As a player I like the weather, it might just be because I'm an offensive lineman," Mangold said. He added that other players he'd spoken to were excited about the possibility of playing the game in the cold.

Manning recalled winning the NFC Championship Game in Green Bay in 2007 as one of his most memorable conditions.

"It gets back to playing football, it's old school," said Manning.

Lamping said venues across the city and in both states would be used for parties and concerts leading up to the game, including Liberty State Park on the Saturday night before the Super Bowl.

If the bid carried and the Giants were able to get back to the Super Bowl, Manning speculated on a Jets-Giants game in New Jersey.

"That would be a dream come true," Manning said.

Martin agreed that a local Super Bowl would be exciting, but that northeast NFL fans would be well served by having a game of that magnitiude here. A reporter pointed out that the Jets and Giants have two votes, which made the owners of both teams smile.

"Score at the bottom of the first, 2-0," Tisch said.

If it can be played in NY it can be played in GB

Football is not an artificial game and neither should the conditions be.

LOL.. I find it ironic that this statement is being tossed out by a fan of a dome team. ;)

But I agree.. all NFL cities should be able to make a bid at hosting the SB. All might not be able to effectively host it.. but all the same it should be at least open to all.

Bah. I cheer for the Vikings not because they play in a dome, but because of their superiority. Despite being from my home state.. I also am led to believe that there isn't a better professional football mascot than the Vikings. Once ashore, we shall burn the boats men! Because there is no turning back.. It's either victory or death!

Besides, my favorite college team now plays outdoors.. And for the first time in my life last year I was able to sit in the stands of an outdoor game.. I've always been use to outdoor football because I played it.. In Superior, WI of all places (doesn't get colder than that). I never had the joys of sitting outside in the elements bundled up in whatever gear I could find because I was obviously either on the field or watching my teams in the Dome.

Yah...

Good luck shipping all of the stuff into New York for the whole experience.

The freaking Union Jack Asses will make it a horror show. I have attended conferences and trade shows at the J.C.C. at least ten times, and it is a nightmare.

Once I was expecting a critical Fed Ex at 10 AM. I was waiting at the dock, it arrived. It was sitting 5 feet in front of me. I asked one guy if he could grab it for me and let me sign. No. he had to get on a freaking walkie talkie to another Union, who had to get on another walkie talky to another union, and so forth.

It was 5 feet in front of me behind a chain link fence. I finally got it 2.5 hours later. Which was way too late.

Finally I lost it, and said just give me the damn thing, and deliver the empty box. This big bastard almost went through the fence to beat the shit out of me. It was like a episode from the Soprano's

Sorry. Off topic, sort of.

I think there should be more games in the cold, for the Super Bowl. I like this idea.

Some of the most memorable games were bad weather games.

Mucky Tundra (2h) : Or ties, but let's be real here
Mucky Tundra (2h) : Other scenario was Falcons+Rams losses
Mucky Tundra (2h) : Needed a Falcons loss for a Seahawk loss to clinch
buckeyepackfan (2h) : Am I wring in saying if Tge Vikings beat The Seahawks, The Packers clinch?
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : Agreed; you stinks
Zero2Cool (21-Dec) : I'm not beating anyone. I stinks.
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : rough injury for tank dell. guy can't catch abreak
beast (21-Dec) : So far the college playoffs have sucked... One team absolutely dominates the other
beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating
Zero2Cool (20-Dec) : There is a rule that if your name starts with 'b' you lose 15 points. Hey, I don't make the rules, I just enforce them!
wpr (20-Dec) : and then there is Beast. Running away with it all.
beast (20-Dec) : As of tonight, 3 way tie for 2nd in Pick'em, that battle is interesting!
beast (20-Dec) : Lions vs Vikings could be the main last game as it could determine division winners or #1 vs #2 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Or if KC needs to win for the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Right now it looks like the only prime worthy games are Det-Minny and KC-Denver (if Denver can clinch a wild card spot)
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : The entirety of week 18 being listed as flex is weird
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Matt LaFleur today says unequivocally "Ted Thompson had nothing to do with the drafting of Jordan Love."
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Apparently, the editing is what pieces comments together. That Ted thing ... fake news.
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : LaFleur "opportunity that Ted Thompson thought was too good to pass up"
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Jordan Love pick was Ted Thompson's idea.
Mucky Tundra (19-Dec) : Kyle Shanahan on signing De'Vondre Campbell as a FA last offseason: “We obviously made a mistake.”
packerfanoutwest (19-Dec) : Alexander’s last season with GB
Martha Careful (18-Dec) : if I were a professional athlete, I would probably look to see who the agent is for Kirk Cousins and then use him
beast (18-Dec) : $100 million fully guaranteed Kirk Cousins gets benched for rookie
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : a lower case b
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : The real lie is how beast capitalized his name in his message while it's normally spelled with
packerfanoutwest (18-Dec) : haha that's a lie
beast (17-Dec) : Despite what lies other might tell, Beast didn't hate the Winter Warnings, it felt refreshing to Beast for some reason.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : whiteout uniforms in general are pretty lame and weak. NFL greed at it's worst
Martha Careful (17-Dec) : The Viking uniforms, the whiteout uniforms specifically absolutely suck
beast (17-Dec) : Thanks Zero2Cool, looks a lot better now
beast (17-Dec) : Seems like someone has a crush on me, can't stop talking about me
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : Should be gooder now. The forum default theme went to goofy land.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : What the hell
packerfanoutwest (17-Dec) : yeah beast hates the Winter Warning Unies
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : WR Odell Beckham Jr is officially a free agent after clearing waivers.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : Packers are 6th in sacks.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : RB David Montgomery will undergo season-ending knee surgery.
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Dan Campbell on onside kick with 12 minutes left: In hindsight, wish I didn’t do that
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : They have that whole 12th man thing so ...
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : Of the times we've played there, I just can't recall hearing our fans.
wpr (16-Dec) : Well done jdlax. Well done.
wpr (16-Dec) : I think more likely to be Pack fans that live in the area.
