Woodson finds out he fits in

by Mike Vandermause

Two years ago, you couldn't pay cornerback Charles Woodson to show up in Green Bay during the offseason. Now, you can barely get him to leave town.

Woodson returned to Wisconsin in February to work out, long before the Packers' voluntary offseason program began. He appeared again in early March, has been a regular participant in the organized team activity practices, and plans to stick around until mid-June.

Will to succeed drives Williams' rise

Al Harris is in no danger of losing his cornerback job, but if he glances over his shoulder, he will catch a glimpse of a young, hungry, unheralded backup who some day soon wants to be in the starting lineup.

Tramon Williams is one of the fast-rising backups on the Green Bay Packers' roster. He has attended every offseason workout and weight-training session, looked sharp in the two organized team activities practices open to the media in May, and is drawing rave reviews from the coaching staff.

Kampmans get on with life after tornado

Parkersburg, Iowa - Standing on the front step of Claas Kampman's home at sunrise this morning, one could only hear the distant hum of bulldozers and the constant flapping of debris in the stiff, cold morning wind.

Stripped-bare trees had tattered bedspreads beating against them. Twisted pieces of sheet metal couldn't break loose of titled electrical poles, whose lines were so scattered and warped they looked like gray strands of spray string.

Teammates Firmly Behind Rodgers

As the quarterback with the unenviable task of following a legend, Aaron Rodgers has the advantage of knowing inside and out the offense he's charged with running.

But all the time spent in Green Bay prior to now has provided another, perhaps even more valuable, element to the transition to the post-Brett Favre era. By putting his work ethic, study habits and communication skills out there for all to see as Favre's primary backup for three years, Rodgers already has the respect and the confidence of his teammates as he takes over the starting job.

Favre on the cover of Madden '09

The upcoming release of Madden NFL 09 on August 12 marks the 20th anniversary of the highly successful video game franchise. This milestone of longevity could help explain why the game's producer, EA Sports, seemed to have been in a nostalgic mood with an eye towards history when selecting this year's cover athlete. Instead of going with a bright young star of the game, as has been the tradition since Madden 2001, they chose a man who had been a dominant force in the NFL over much of the 20 year history of the video game, former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. Having announced his retirement in early March, Favre becomes the first non-active player to appear on the game's cover.

"Madden NFL Football and Brett Favre are sports icons who have set the standard and revolutionized their positions within their respective genres," said Madden NFL Executive Producer Dale Jackson. "Brett Favre is a perfect fit for the Madden NFL 09 cover, as he epitomizes everything the franchise has stood for the past 20 years - longevity, excellence, and a love of football."

Favre's legacy is cemented as one of the most beloved players of his generation and one of the most admired NFL players to ever grace the cover of Madden NFL. The future Hall of Famer is the league's only three-time Most Valuable Player and he holds the NFL record for most consecutive starts for quarterbacks. He completed his 17-year career as the NFL's all-time leader in touchdowns, completions, attempts, yards, and wins.

Madden NFL 09 strives to take authenticity and depth of gameplay to an new level with more than 85 new features and enhancements, including the all-new Total Control Animation system. This system will allow players to perform combination moves like never before and includes an innovative picture-in-picture playcall window. In Madden NFL 09, the game engine is continually assessing the player's performance and will adapt a custom experience to every type of gamer, from newcomer to the veteran Madden NFL player.

Madden NFL 09 will also feature a network-inspired broadcast presentation. Players will benefit from the authentic football knowledge of an in-booth play-by-play and color commentary team featuring Cris Collinsworth and Tom Hammond. In addition, numerous graphical enhancements have been made, including realistic weather and grass, sleeker player models and exterior stadium views.

Madden NFL 09 gives gamers the ability to create online leagues. Fans can now take their rivalries online and compete in leagues with up to 32 teams. Online league play will feature in-depth stat tracking and a flexible scheduling option.

Last year, Madden NFL 08 was named the 2007 Game Critics "Best Sports Game" award at the E3 Media and Business Summit, "Best Team Sports Game" at the Spike TV Video Games Awards, "Best Sports Game of the Year" by GameTrailers. The game also earned GameSpot's "Best Sports Game" Reader's Choice Award and was named one of MSNBC's "Best Sports Games" of 2007. According to EA, the Madden NFL franchise has sold more than 70 million copies over the past 20 years and, since 2002, has been the top selling sports game each year in North America.

Madden NFL 09 will be available for the Xbox 360 video game system from Microsoft, PlayStation2 and PLAYSTATION3 computer entertainment systems, Wii, Nintendo DS, PSP (PlayStationPortable) handheld entertainment system and is rated RP by the ESRB.

Favre Informs Thompson He Intends To Retire

Statement From Packers General Manager Ted Thompson:

"Brett Favre has informed us of his intention to retire from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL. He has had one of the greatest careers in the history of the National Football League, and he is able to walk away from the game on his own terms - not many players are able to do that.

"The Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude. He has given Packers fans 16 years of wonderful memories, a Super Bowl championship among them, that will live on forever. Brett's many accomplishments on the field are legendary. He leaves the game holding virtually every career passing record, plus his consecutive starts streak, which may never be duplicated.

"The uniqueness of Brett Favre - his personality, charisma and love of the game - undoubtedly will leave him as one of the enduring figures in NFL history."

Green Bay - Eli Manning has arrived, and just in time to take his New York Giants on an improbable trip to the Super Bowl.

A suddenly matured Manning guided the Giants to their 10th straight road win Sunday, a frostbitten 23-20 overtime victory over Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers for the NFC championship.

Packers prepare for playoffs following victory over Lions
By CHRIS JENKINS
AP Sports Writer

Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers didn't have to choose between playing it safe and playing to win on Sunday.

The Packers finished their turnaround regular season with a 34-13 victory over the Detroit Lions while resting several key players for the playoffs.

Brett Favre extended his quarterback-record consecutive starts streak to 253 games, but even he didn't keep his helmet strapped on for very long. Favre led the Packers (13-3) to touchdowns on their first three possessions before handing the ball to backup Craig Nall in the second quarter.
