Anyone read the new JSO piece on him, and what the Kevin Greene visit entailed? Holy crap. Sounds like this guy WILL be a player, and I hope he winds up being a steal for GB in R6.

It is a good read, but JSO has some stuff messed up with my account or I'd post a link...

BTW, I like what Greene did in this visit.

Quote:

The first to respond was Kevin Greene. The Green Bay Packers outside linebackers coach was heading south soon, so he stopped at Illinois State and the two spent the day together.

As Greene and Nowinsky exchanged ideas - highlights of Clay Matthews looping on the screen - Nowinsky pictured his own edge rusher, Nate Palmer, in this defense.

"As I'm watching that, I'm thinking Nate has a great opportunity with the Packers because his skill, his athleticism, his work ethic, he fits in really good," Nowinsky said. "It's about getting an opportunity."

On his visit to Green Bay, the 6-foot-2, 248-pound Palmer eventually met Greene. They watched film of Matthews, and Greene offered a challenge.

"He said, 'I can get you there, if you want it. If you want to go there, I got what it takes to get you to that next level,' " Palmer said. "(He said), 'All you have to do is be a hard worker like him. I think that's the kind of person you are. Let's go. Let's go to that next level.' "

Palmer described his meeting with Greene as "an intense conversation."

I love the intensity of Coach Greene. He is going to get bumped up stairs soon. Maybe not in GB but somewhere. That will be a shame. He is very very very good at taking on players one on one and developing them. He is going to miss it when he has to deal with a larger group. GB will miss him if they are not the ones to promote him.

He always seems to have one player who he is working on and developing that fire he had.

He sure has great size, long arms, some good speed to go along with it. If he has a good moter watch out for Palmer.

Cool article - didn't know they recruited this way - meaning sometimes its just the proximity of someone visiting and making a connection with the coach and or player and then they have their guy.

Hope he works out and he takes inspiration from cm3

imagine 2 cm3s and our new DE on the front line rushing the QB.

Every once in awhile the thinnest of threads gets a player into the pros. I am sure it is the same for footballers (soccer players for you troglodytes) too. All the teams go to the combine. Most teams will attend player's pro days. But it is doing these kinds of things that lead you to diamonds in the rough. truth be told Kevin probably wouldn't have dropped by if Palmer was going to school in Vermont or New Mexico. It was on his way and he was willing to give up a few hours of his time so he did it.

These are the fun stories. All the more so if Palmer is able to play for a few years. If he is able to become a starter he will have to set aside a few bucks for his college coaches retirement fund. Big Grin

I really found it interesting that the Packers added a couple players for the smaller school.. Ill State a 9-4 I-AA school.. be interesting how these three cats do..
I think when there's enough will and aggression, there's no shortage of talent either.

I love it... now I really hope this kid pans out for the Packers.. just to piss in the cheerios of a couple Bears fans..

Nate... hopefully you will soon be freed from your illness that goes along with being a Bear fan.

FoxSports wrote:
Friends, co-workers and classmates of Nate Palmer are still processing what happened and how to react to it. Living in what Palmer described as "the heart of Bears Country," the Green Bay Packers' sixth-round draft pick has suddenly joined up with the enemy, leaving those around him a bit conflicted.

"Every time I see someone now, they say, 'I'm going to cheer for you, but not the team,'" Palmer said in an interview with FOXSportsWisconsin.com. "I told them you can't get one without the other. A few of my friends who were Bears fans said they're going to jump on the Packers' bandwagon."

Up until only a couple weeks ago, Palmer was just like his friends, actively rooting against Green Bay.

"I've always been a Bears fan," Palmer said. "Times have changed. Right now, you can't be a fan anymore. The fan in you has to go away for this process."

Palmer is making himself an easy target for those he's come across in Illinois since the draft. The team gave him a hat and T-shirt, and Palmer has been wearing the green and gold Packers hat every day on campus and around his hometown.

"People keep telling me I've got the wrong hat on," Palmer said.

One of his co-workers at an internship in Illinois went beyond just criticizing his choice in headwear. A woman named Christie left a note on Palmer's desk after he returned to the office the week following the draft.

"As a loyal Bears fan, I'm sorry to say that I can no longer speak to or work with you," the note read, which Palmer posted on his Twitter account. "I feel betrayed."

TT seems to like the players that were highly rated coming out of high school but got lost in the college "shuffle". Maybe he sees something that he feels better coaches can bring out of a player.

Another nice thing about players from small schools/UDFA: No guaranteed spot/no ego=easier to coach
