Green Bay — History shows that Ted Thompson is wise for not spending in free agency.

But that doesn’t mean the Packers general manager has been immune to error. Multiple times, paying his own players hasn’t worked out. Case in point: Two years into a five-year, $33.75 million deal, A.J. Hawk needed to take a pay cut. And after deciding not to sign a 3-4 defensive end and hardly calling tight end Tom Crabtree, Green Bay inked Brad Jones to a three-year, $11.25 million deal.

To recap, Jones contract is worth more than what Cullen Jenkins got from the New York Giants and what Chris Canty received from the Baltimore Ravens --- two veterans who could've been ideal fits in Green Bay's scheme. The Packers may still address this position. But when asked about the Packers' front line last weekend, Mike Daniels expressed confidence in the current group.

The different pieces, he says, can fit together.

“This is an incredibly versatile group and everybody is great at what they do, and then some,” Daniels said. “I really do like our group."

I really like Mike Daniels. I'd love to see this player make the leap from yr 1 to yr 2.

A high quality DE and NT would be great additions to this line. I'm hopeful our draft choices can make meaningful contributions this year, as I think we'll really need that in order to be an improved defense.
