Packers.com wrote:GREEN BAY—Proponents of free agency often point out that the Packers’ two Super Bowl teams in the last two decades have included pivotal players acquired on the open market.
They are certainly correct.
Conveniently forgotten, however, are the significant misses in free agency during those same periods of player acquisition. The Packers didn’t bat 1.000 in free agency in contributing to their championship rosters. Nobody does.
In short, the Packers took a number of swings in order to connect on a few hits and home runs during those times free agency provided valuable help to the team. It’s the type of approach the Packers have all but abandoned now – they haven’t signed more than one notable free agent in any year since 2006, and signed none in 2010 and 2011 – for a number of reasons. |

Funny how Packers.com has to go back in time just to even talk about free agency and the Packers. |

One thing that isn't mentioned. Free agency in 93 through the 96SB, was uncharted territory. We were lucky and got Reggie. Reggie was instrumental in getting others to come, and come for reasonable cost. and we were able to do it before both players and GMs figured out how the FA system was going to work. It was not always just about the money to players then, winning actually was a reason.
Today, players and agents know the system. Players are less willing to earn less for a better chance at a SB than they were 20 years ago.
I like Teds approach, but I do also believe there is a time for FA. And that the Packers are in that time. Ted having done his job great, has built a team, that is not going to get much better if at all, just through the draft. A draft is usually considered a great draft, if you get 2 or 3 starters. At that rate, by the time you draft a full starting roster, your first draft picks are either leaving the league on average or coming up on their big payday contract. And at that point, you need to continue to just have great drafts to hold par.
I don't see improving this team much through the draft, especially when considering losses like Jennings. I think the team needs to infuse at least a couple good FA, don't have to be the top prospects but very good ones. I think this team also needs less draft quantity, and better quality. There is not room for 6 or 7 rookies, get 2 or 3 with a better shot at starting right away. Do that for a year or two, and then go back to the draft go replenish the youth and backups.
It appears that Ted might be a little to tied to drafting only. |
The world needs ditch diggers to Danny!!! |
