Better not. They'll find out how often he is posting during, er, working hours. Some employers can be shits about that.

On the other hand, maybe that's another reason for doing it. Who wants to work for that kind of untrusting/micromanaging shit.
None of the above. It wouldn't have been a wasted vote. Obama and Romney -- Those were the wasted votes.

Green Bay Police Department needs a Software Engineer, hmm... I applied even though I'm probably under qualified, I don't see any harm in trying. The position would actually be perfect for me. I'd get to show off my programming geek and also help train others how to benefit from my PC geek knowledge. I'm actually hoping I land this one more than the one tomorrow. I can't be too choosey though, both would be great opportunities for me.

show them how you can hack into Ashwaubenon's PD website and move funds over to the GB accounts. That ought to get you in the door.

My word. You are NOT under-qualified.

Do you need me to coach you? Seriously. I'll coach you how to interview better. I'm free today and tomorrow and after that, I won't be free any more because I'm starting a new job.

Send me a PM if you're interested. Free of charge. I owe you one because this site rules and you're paying for it.

Congrats on the job! Hopefully they let you post a dozen or more times daily here!

Monday I was actually given quite a few pointers. She said I did some things well, but that I absolutely need to use better confidence in an interview and I had to be more cocky borderline arrogant. Any tips you got, I'm open to them.

Keep in mind, I didn't apply telling them I was under qualified, lol. I've spent the morning reading technical interview questions/answers and how to accentuate the positive. :)

OK, for one, find out what you CAN'T do and find out a little bit about it. Tell them that you don't know how to do it yet but you do know this much and you're absolutely fascinated by it and can guarantee that you'll be good at it fast if given a chance because you're a fast learner.

They want to see confidence.

NOBODY has all the skills and NOBODY knows everything. You end up learning a lot of things on the job. I've interviewed quite a few people in my life and the ones I gave thumbs up to are not necessarily the most qualified, but the ones who seem like they WANT to be there. The latter type will perform better than the former almost every time.

Excellent. The last part gives me lots of confidence because I'm told often that I have great passion for coding and learning.

Technical interview questions are my weak spot. I've spent quite a few hours understanding the concepts I'm expected to know and actually still working on it now. Coding some examples to coincide with the answers I'll give.

Edit, I took notes from technical interviews from 2008 to random interviews through 2011. I've been using that as my platform to learn from. Notes such as when asked how to prevent a class from being inherited and I had no answer. You use a sealed class to prevent it from being inherited.

OK, hot tip #2. Have you done any side projects? Heck, print them out and bring them to interviews.

I worked in a company a long time ago where I had to do a lot of Perl tools. That company no longer exists so they lost their copyrights to the tools I wrote.

I can't code in Perl nowadays, but if I had to do it, I'll get it back in a few weeks. (I've been a UNIX Admin, not a coder since the early 00s). So I print out those tools and bring them to interviews. I say "I can't do this right now, but I've done this in the past and if I had to, I can re-learn how to do it again. I just got cobwebs because it's been since the dot com days when I coded in this language."

They eat it up every time because it's real. I got people who will vouch that I was the guy who wrote the tools.

So yeah, print up shit and bring it to interviews. Show them what you've done in the past and make a point that you LOVE doing this stuff and you're only going to get better.

Most importantly, show PASSION. Show that you LOVE doing this stuff. Passion leads to excellence.

You have no clue how much motivation that is giving me. Thank you. I was actually debating on how to show my previous work. I have the source code from previous job, but I obviously can't compile them connecting to their servers without severe consequences. I was considering printing off the NFL Pick'em and the Top 10 SQL queries from this site as well as some code from previous jobs. I'm definitely going to do it now.

I second the Zombie approach.. bring tangible work and examples with you.. even simply tools like the windows process killer I wrote for work.. at start up it hunts and kills processes on PC I don't want running and logs positives. Simple but seems to draw attention quickly.

Much like other facets of life, and yes the opposite sex, it is about confidence. Not as much cockiness but being confident in what you say and how you say it. Interviewing is so much like a first date.. jittery might be cute.. but it is confidence that will bring it home.
I think when there's enough will and aggression, there's no shortage of talent either.

I was pretty nervous about the phone interview, but after today, there are several other promising jobs that are more intriguing. I really want that GBPD position, that just screams Kevin all over it, well, other than it being a Police Department.

That's another thing you can work with a friend on, a practice screening.

I worked at a company that got bought out once and they laid us all off. After laying us off, the company that bought us out actually paid for consultants to help us find work. A lot of folks didn't take advantage of their services but you can get your hiney I did. They helped me write my resume, plus had me do fake interviews where they actually videotaped me and told me what I did right and what I did wrong.

This is something you don't have to do with a professional. You can do it with a friend. (But of course it was nice to work with a professional).

Seriously, if you want to get good at playing the piano, practice several hours every day. If you want to get good at interviewing, then practice interviewing with a friend. It really makes a big difference. By the time I started interviewing, it was really easy.

I AM!

Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, reverent.

Again, from memory. Seriously.

Skip the code, memorize them, aspire to live 'em. Walk into an interview with 'em in the back of your mind. You will be confident.

Home run every time. Keep the Sandusky-types out the Boy Scouts, a fine way to roll...
