We had tons of yards. Big deal. We scored 36 points. Big deal. Take out the Jennings 80+, the Grant TD, Rodgers scramble and what do you get?

300 yards passing for 2 TD's. That is not good enough passing production. You have to keep passing for play action to work. McCarthy is terrible play calling. He is fine a times a bad at times. And seems to be bad in big games.

If you selectively delete big stats from each game, you will have pretty unimpressive numbers. Every team/player's stats will be bolstered by 1 or 2 big plays, but it doesn't mean you disregard them!

The packers moved the ball effectively in the 2nd half, scored 22 points in the 4th quarter, and handed the defense a very winnable situation. Should the packers run just for the sake of saying 'hey, look...look, we attempted a balenced attack, give us a pat on the back!' The steelers ratio was 46:19, so is their playcaller a hack as well?

I am not happy about the defense either, but that isn't the subject of this thread, neither is Mason, or Bush or Bell. It is about McCarthy and his responsibility is scoring points. We scored points but we also left a bunch on the field. Running the ball, scores points 14 in the game including Rodgers. Running the ball opens up the pass with play action, keeping the LBers and SS from dropping deep into the passing lanes. And Running the ball keeps Rodgers from getting killed.

Just because there was some success, does not mean we couldn't have had more. And taking out plays out of the ordinary shows the normal produciton. If Grant runs 8 times for 0 yards, then 1 for 90, he is not a 10 yard per play runner. He is a 0 YPC back that breaks one sometimes.

Every team leaves points on the field, every game. We scored 36 points and should have scored 39 if not for Crosbyfail. At what point do you have to stop saying "Well, we could have/should have scored more points" and stop blaming the coach? It's not MM's fault that so many balls were dropped (that ended up stalling a lot of the drives), and it's not his fault Crosby missed, and it's not his fault that Rodgers was throwing wild the first drive or two.

Running the ball just wasn't working in this game. I'm sorry, but there's no way we would have scored more points relative to the Steelers (since there'd probably be less possessions in the game) by running the ball. We had all kinds of success in the air, and most of our lack of success was not due to great coverage, it was due to drops and Rodgersfail early in the game. Bringing a safety into the box wouldn't have done much for us, we were already having our way with them. The PA pass wouldn't have done much more of anything for us, even if we did set it up and they did bite.

Sorry, I simply wouldn't agree with many more runs than we did beyond for the sake of surprising them. Maybe 3-5 more tops.

How can we say the run wasn't working. Grant got the ball 4 times in the 2nd half. 2 were the first two plays in the half for us. The remaining time, we ran twice with Grant and one was a 24 yard TD.

If I don't try to turn my car on, how can I say it doesn't run?

Notice the beginning of the game. two drives, both 3 and out, then we run Grant twice and hit Jennings for 83. That wasn't even play action, is was just the effect of having to worry even a little about the RB in the back field.

Why bother trying to turn your car on when your helicopter is warmed up and waiting? The passing game, minus the drops, was working as well as I've ever seen it. We were averaging 7.98 yards per pass ATTEMPT, and we were averaging 4.2 yards per called run. Take away the longest run and the longest completion, and you have 6.38 yards per pass attempt and 1.55 yards per called run. If you're averaging 6.38 yards per pass attempt, why the hell would you run hardly at all, much less if you're averaging 8? I guarantee you that if Grant would have gotten 20 more carries, he would have never bumped that 4.2 yards/carry up any higher.

While I don't agree with all the 5 man sets we were using ALL FREAKING GAME (seriously, at least make them have to worry about the RB catching a pass out of the backfield), you can't blame the first two drives on too many pass plays. Rodgers was overthrowing EVERYTHING. That's why we started running more, then we took a shot downfield and scored. We might have ran more the next possession, but after that Rodgers began executing consistently, and we stuck with what was working. I fail to see the problem. Of all the things you could bitch about in this game, passing too much isn't really one of them.

I noticed this too. What's with all the drops these past few weeks? I think this week was our worst. The normally dependable Driver had a lot of drops the past 2 weeks.

great posts porforis. Balance is great and all, but it was a shoot-out game that the packers kept pace in. Also, steelers were 46:19 in favor of the pass and won but nobody is complaining about their playcalling.

In this particular game, the pass was working very effectively so I don't see why we need to 'fire M. M.' because he stuck with it.

Mike McCarthy did fine. He got us 36 points.

The culprit of this game is Dom Capers. He was rushing 3 guys all night long and allowed Ben to get his team 37 points.

Screw balance. Do what works. Aaron kicked ass and almost had 400 yards with his 3 TDs + 1 running.

Can you blame him? He was knocked down 5 times in his first 13 dropbacks, and a couple of those hits were brutal. Blame for this lies squarely on the offensive line.

Wow, somebody knew that McCarthy was going to call 9 runs to 48 passes.

Yeah, it was the lack of running game that beat us today ... not the 500 yards passing we gave up. If only we'd run more against Pittsburgh -- who gives up 3.6 yards per carry -- then we'd have won.

For that matter, we were similarly dominant in defense. Gotta hand it to the d in that regard -- they don't give up big rushing performances.

"PackFanWithTwins" wrote:

So not having offensive balance and controlling the ball didn't play into the outcome?

If you have a defense that is being attacked effectively, one of the simplest things you can do to assist is keep them off the field with a more methodical attack.. which would require a more clock draining running game.

Shorten up the amount of time the opposition has the ball and it directly will impact the performance of your defense.

The Steelers had the blueprint to our defense as we had one for theirs.. so I hold little worry about a defensive collapse past this week.

However.. I have concerns about a inconsistent running game/ abandoning the run and our ability to consistently catch passes on offense.. along with the sheer lack of discipline in regards to penalties.. those three things I worry about come playoff time.
