i don't know why I can't feel optimistic.

back in the years preceding the last super bowl win, it was like the team was a serious contender for several years before. they just kept getting screwed by dallas.

this team just doesn't feel anything like that. yeah, they have good players. but something's missing. and i don't just mean the OL now. i can't put my finger on it. but this just feels too much like a team that has already shown its best for the year, and its still half a notch below where a serious playoff team should be.

i'm not disputing the premise of the subject line. and I now think this team can make it into the playoffs. but that's as much because the other teams they're competing with for those wildcards are equally underwhelming.

every year there are two kinds of playoff teams -- the bonafide contenders and the ones that get in as the best-of-the-rest.

when i'm most optimistic (i.e., when I'm not whining about the OL), i think this team is only in the latter category.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

dhpackr, McCarthy DOES get on his players for penalties.

The biggest problem I think people have with this team is the Tampa loss. Remove that, and we lost to two teams that are leading their divisions.

This team is getting better, coincidentally with the return of Mark Tauscher. I still wish we could impose our will and resolve in the running game, but you can't have everything.

Should we make the playoffs and actually win a game or two, I think it speaks volumes to the type of character this team is building. It's one thing to have a great year and not have anything to overcome, quite another to survive all the injuries we have and still be there at playoff time.

There goes our blue chip LT. I guess TJ will have to do.

One major comfort I'm taking from this topsy-turvy season is that Eli Manning (curse him) is being exposed for the barely mediocre quarterback we all knew he was before some of us were blinded by the glitter of the ring on his hand. Anyone who said they'd take Eli Manning over Aaron Rodgers before this season began -- and yes, there were a few on this very site -- should stand up, take their lumps, and admit they were a fool for saying that, as far as I'm concerned. 😉

For the record, I've always said Aaron's better than Eli. Eli Manning and Big Ben are lucky. They're on good teams.

Now when I think of elite QBs, I think of people who can elevate teams, not just ride good teams. Eli and Big Ben fall short. Last year the Steelers had the #1 D in the NFL, which as history shows is often good enough to win the SB without anything else.

Eli was on a team with fire, passion, and got hot in the 2nd half of the season. He made one good pass which in reality was a miraculous catch so the WR should get a lot of the credit as well.

Aaron last year was on a team with the #22 D. Hard to win games with a shitty D. History proves this again and again. See Dan Marino for instance. Or Dan Fouts. Or Lynn Dickey. I can do this for days so I'll stop at those 3.

This year, we have the #11 D and the worst OL in the NFL and still we're 7-4. Pretty impressive.

I'd be more than willing to bet ten years from now, Aaron will be seen as a better QB than either Eli or Ben.

I would like to point out that if the Eagles beat the Redskins this week that they have the tie breaker over us. Just saying... so we're probably in the 6th seed still at the end of the week.

The Eagles currently have a better Conf record.... unless they lose to an NFC team...

If we've gonna lose a game or hopefully it won't be against the NFC teams...

I guess you didn't watch the Super Bowl last year with Ben making a Super Bowl winning drive? Or that he is right there this year with Rodgers in yards passing, oh and of course his career record will have to suck for the next 5 years for Rodgers to even come close to catching him in that. And do we forget that Warner had his tea in the Super Bowl last year and he don't live off a defense. So i really don't know how you folks are basing your opinion that Rodgers is the best qb in the remaining games.

Warner is incredible. He's having an off year though.

Big Ben was the absolute WORST QB ever to win a SB. Ever. Look up the stats.

And as I said, history shows you can win a SB with a #1 D and not much else.

Last year's SB was lost on one play by Kurt Warner, throwing an INT on 1st and Goal from the 1 that was returned by a TD. That's 14 points right there. And guess who had the #1 D in the NFL last year? That's right - the Steelers. They allowed only 13.9 points per game. #1.

Aaron's the 3rd best QB in the NFC right now behind my main man Brett and Drew Brees. In the AFC, I'd take Brady and Manning over him and that's it. That puts Aaron at #5 in the NFL.

Let's now look at some stats...

QB rating - Favre, Brees, Aaron
TDs - Rodgers and Brees are tied for #1 and Favre and Manning are tied for #3. Note though that Rodgers played one more game so he'll more than likely drop to #4 or #5 if Brady has another Brady day.
Yards per game - Manning, Brees, Schaub, Ben R, Aaron
Scrambling - Aaron alone at #1 and tied for #1 in rushing TDs for QBs

Pretty impressive considering he's behind the WORST OL in the NFL.

Oh, forgot to add Aaron's TDs/INTs vs Big Ben's:

Aaron 22 5
Roeth 17 10

As it stands right now and i would've never said this at the beginning of the year But i would take Big Ben over alot of the qbs right now. You claim Rodgers is doing so great because of his o-line sucks well Ben has a really bad line and if it wasn't for him getting away from sure sacks he would be right there with Rodgers sack totals. Look at the yards and tds Ben is there with fewer games and alot less to work with at wr.

But your right Warner will have more tds after this weeks game then Rodgers and will pass for over 4000 yards again this year but hes having a down year.

I have seen alot of Ben this year and he just impresses me on how 3 guys can be hanging on him and he will get away and complete a pass down the field.
