The holes were definitely larger, but it seems like he broke a lot of 2nd level tackles in the secondary to break free for long runs in '07. Maybe I'm thinking too simply, but he doesn't look like the same player to me.

It seems like he's not making it too that second level -- which has to put a significant part of the blame on the o-line.

Wow, I just went back to watch some of his runs in '07. Gaping lanes. Barely got touched on a lot of his long runs. Ok, I blame the o-line more than anything now. Clifton had a few great run blocks on some of his long runs. Too bad Cliffy isn't playing like that anymore.

I think it was simple, stupid luck. He honestly doesn't look all that different to me this year. He's a one-cut-and-go back, which works with a (functioning) ZBS-style attack. He's not overly strong and either runs too upright or gets so low he can't stay on his feet. He's not shifty and never was - same goes for speed. If he gets to the second level with a good head of steam, he can do some damage - but the stars have to align for that to happen. One thing he can absolutely not do is improvise - if the play breaks down, dude is toast.

Granted, I wasn't ever that high on the guy - RB's are my 'specialty' (if I can say I have one), and pound-for-pound I'd rather see Jackson on the field if he could ever be healthy. He's got a more complete toolkit, I think.

Bottom line from my viewpoint is that Grant isn't an elite back, and you need one if you want to get production from your run game with a sub-par line. He's not a bad player or a bad guy, just a bad fit.

Gotta link? πŸ™‚ I wanna see the good Grant in action in an attempt to make sense of it all. Here's what I remember: Grant getting four or five yards deep into the defense, making a defender miss, then making one or two big cutbacks and finding space.

We saw that against Cleveland last week (I know, I know -- Cleveland stinks). Not surprisingly, that's one of the better run-blocking games we've had in ages.

I hate to say it, but the Cleveland game sounds like (I wasn't able to watch it) a case of our not-very-good o-line sacking up big time and beating a depleted and sick Browns d-line. In other words, an anomaly and mostly proof that Grant can, like any NFL-level back, produce when he's got big holes to run through.

So you either get a line that can create those holes*, or you get the kind of RB who can make his own room - the former is a lot easier (or should be) than the latter.

* and no, '07 wasn't the same line as last year or now - 2 years is a long time for an already-old OT, and Cliffy and Tausch were both a good deal better back then.

The first one against the Vikes was nice -- compression set with three receivers (I think two of them were TEs) and the FB in the backfield. This looks a little more "West Coast"-esque than the predominantly shotgun offense we seem to run. I'd like to see more pass formations run from under center because it gives more of a threat to run. Nice play.

The Bears and Lions highlights were pure zone blocking plays. Now -- listen here: I think the ZBS has been overall a failure because too many times we have 1-2 yard runs. That said, if we can continue to use it as a "wrinkle" in our run game then plays like ^^ will hopefully happen again. The Bears play in particular -- you see the zone shift by the o-line, the TEs and FBs get a hat on a player, Grant makes a quick cut and then hits on the jets.
