Martin is often singled out as being the weakest Packer in the WR corps. Now, consider training camp '09. If no rookie or PS WR beats out Martin, what does that say about our WR corps? If Martin is as poor as his record indicates (of course we need to take into account how many looks/snaps he got over the season), then that suggests to me that we have a strong 1-4 with a significant drop-off at 5. Are we being overconfident in our assessment of our WR strength?

I recall Brett Swain not really showing much in training camp last year. Perhaps Jennings' friend could perform well and cement a spot, especially with some wise words from Greg. I do believe Jake Allen showed glimpses with a few fine catches last season, so he's my dark horse for landing a spot.

In light of this, my suggestion therefore is a slight modification of the Big 5:

Driver
Jennings
Jones
Nelson
Finley

Yes, I'd like to see Finley have a shot, released from either his TE position or motioned either side out as a slot WR. His physical skills are better suited to being a pass catcher than a run blocker.

So we have Driver and Jennings, two of our speedier WRs, then we have Jones and Nelson as our possession WRs, with support from Finley running slants or cross routes.

I do believe Tory Humphrey is a better lock to make the team than Simmons, Allen or Swain, suggesting 5 WRs and 3 TEs, but I suppose we really should wait for OTAs and training camp.

5 WRs, 3 TEs and 3 FBs. What an interesting offense that would be.

Martin was brought back, because we know what we have with him. A fair WR, with good height, and pretty good at blocking. Now he is by no means safe on the team. If he is beaten out, so be it, but at least we know what we are getting in the worst case.

He is sort of the bar for the UDFA and others to shoot for, if they beat him they make the team, if not, then they don't.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Does anyone believe that Rodgers and Martin being close friends had nothing to do with Martin getting a fair shot at earning a roster spot?

My concern is that our practice squad players and UDFAs won't be given sufficient reps to have a fair shot at unseating some of our current receivers.

I always felt that Favre was a bit "Sharpe-centric". I understood it...friendship, TRUST, etc. (Loved both of them-not going there to fiasco watchers)

One of the things I saw in Favre that I hope to see in Rodgers is the vast improvement in the ability to rapidly go through his progressions.

I have stated in the past that I feel that Rodgers is half-way there, and half-way is an excellent way of putting it, in that my sense is that Rodgers consistently sees about half of the receivers...it is but an opinion, but I think some well-respected analysts have seen this as well.

I am thrilled with the kind of tough decisions that GBP mgmt are going to have to make this off-season regarding our wide receiver corps. It is my kind of problem.

Just to throw this in, my whole Crabtree bitch was mostly about fixing needs on the DL and OL. I was very harsh against him as a person, player, etc. I believed about 25% of the shit I wrote. I just have so much faith in the future of this corps of receivers that I saw absolutely no need for him, contrasted with a profoundly significant need as was addressed in this draft.

We have a high degree of interchangeability in that corps of receivers.

My personal feeling is that their production hinges far more on Rodgers development than theirs. I like that concept as well. Rodgers passed my personal two packs of cigs during game test with flying colors consistently last year. I don't have a stat for it, but my lungs appreciated it. :thumbleft:

To be fair, if you had Sterling Sharpe to throw to, you'd be looking at him a little bit too much too.

If you threw a ball at Sterling Sharpe and it was in his vicinity, he would get the ball, and there wasn't a **** thing the defender could do about it. He was simply faster and stronger than the guy covering him. It was a mismatch. Every time.

Hands down best WR I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of Jerry Rice so that's really saying something.

But alas, life isn't fair and a stupid injury took Sharpe from us. Had that not happened, Favre today would be retired with 3 Rings, not one.

Rodgers is ahead of schedule as far as I'm concerned. He reads very well, and my biggest criticism was his slow release and by later on in the season, he had already fixed that problem.

Agreed. Had we drafted Crabtree and left Raji on the board, I would have officially been a Ted Thompson hater. That would be two seasons is a row he's done poorly.

I don't buy BPA one bit. When you are rebuilding a franchise, BPA is the best thing in the world. But once the franchise is rebuilt, you have to fix the broken parts. We're at the fix the broken parts stage. WR ain't broke. So don't fix it.

The DL is broke. Fix it.
