Will we play press, my guess would be yes to jamming them off the line.. but I think you will see the corners peel off into zone at times, instead of locking in man up with the safeties over.. teams learned they could exploit the middle of the field in that configuration with the backers more times than not trailing in man.

I think Dom will look at the tape and see the physical nature in which we play and utilize that strength.. but I think, as he noted, that we will mix up the coverages as well..

It will be interesting to see how the interior backers and down lineman adjust more than anything.. if we truly are going to utilize the zone blitz to an extent.. the interior backer primarily and the outer backers in a healthy dose as well are able to effective drop into coverage.. the interior backers or lineman.. will they be able to drop quick enough and deep enough to be effective?

Something none of the guys along that line have experience.. being asked to pop out of their stance.. and drop.. the backers stepping effectively enough to sell the notion they are coming and then drop... a shell game of sorts.. or chess.

I personally cannot wait to see it.. haven't see an really effective adjusting defense in Green Bay since Fritz.. Ed D when he was here got some mileage out of mid game adjustments, but not the down to down game within a game.

Hope I am not to hyped.

I've got a question, most of the games if I remember correctly we go burned on zone coverage right? So how would a 3-4 defense be more effective with zone with only 3 rushers ... then a 4-3 where you've got 4 rushers putting pressure to the opposing QB.

Ummmm have you ever seen a 3-4 only rush 3? (other than like 3rd and 30 and other super long plays...)

The 3-4 never rushes only 3....... (unless it's something every every long and or the those 3 guys are super great and don't need any help)

Basically you blitz and the guys that you don't blitz play zone......

and yes I'm worried about zone because the S have to be smart and nothing against are S..... but their not that play when it comes to zone....... other than maybe Bigby but he's limited in coverage with him not having the best speed and all..... and the injury took his quickness away and hopifully he comes back 100%.

That's why I'm more open to draft Jenkins than a lot of people because he's great with zones or man to man and he can play S until a starting CB spot opens up or stay at S.

i know thats why these sites exist... but i personally think its silly to try and figure out a defensive scheme when the coordinator has stated a couple times already that his goal will be to confuse and disguise.

So if he is bringing a defense that he plans on confusing and disguising PROFESSIONAL NFL offensive coordinators... what chance do we have of actually figuring out what they plan on doin?

I say... forget what you know about a 4-3, 3-4. 10-4. 7011 2 9er defenses... and wait till training camp to see what this thing looks like. because guessing now really wont accomplish anything other than being wrong on opening day.

That is it.. get the padlocks out and shut er down.. speculating, discussing and more or less burning the offseason candle is over.

Actually the scheme and coverages aren't going to be revolutionary.. their is only so much on can do with 11 guys on the field... and it certainly isn't rocket science in terms of understanding it.

The trick is to have one look, forcing the QB into a false read and then pulling the pin on something he didn't anticipate, nor the receivers, TE's or backs. Oh.. there is this little matter of having the talent to pull it off as well. ;)

But the soul of your post, that we don't know what is truly going to happen come September is correct.. that is probably because Dom and staff at this point are trying to figure that out.

But allow me to ask.. what in the hell else do you wish to burn the offseason wax with?

Tiddlywinks?

More of a joke post Packnic.. we are fans.. we chase our tails without a script most of the time..

Oh.. this got me thinking a little... yes hide the crayons and construction paper..

But discussing something tangible like a defense and how one may utilize it make a heck of a lot more sense than Mock Drafts and free agent speculations... in those, there are so many variables and decision makers that it is impossible to predict.. yet every year, myself and countless others start looking at the prospects with very little footage and film to accurately judge them.. yet we peg certain players as our guy.

For an addict like me.. as long as it is football whom really cares.

You never rush 3 in a 3-4. You'll get more pressure via speed. Kampman wont be running with a guy on him from get go, he'll come off the dge and may find it easier to beat the slow lineman to the outside. That's what speed rushers do. I see the OLB mixing up but almost blitzing every down, weather it's off the edge or stunts.

I don't see why can't still run man in the 3-4 and I expect them, as many have said already, to mix it in there. I'd especially work on us trying to really disguise our coverage as much as possible. I also think that one of our problems with zone was that we rarely ran it so we never really worked on it or felt comfortable doing it. I expect that more work with it will help our secondary out with it, and throw in a competent pass rush and I feel they'll show you they can excel at zone too. Believe it or not, zone coverage might help extend Harris' and Woodson's careers. As they get older they lose some of their step which will be one of just a few weaknesses they'll have. If we put them in positions where they can still use their physicality to press receivers but don't have rely as much on being able to run with the fastest receivers it might give them a couple more effective years when otherwise they would've lost too much speed.

The Packers can still run man to man press in 3-4. The Steelers play man to man when they bring 6.

Harris and Collins are bad in zone.

Harris has trouble in zone because I think he's not the quick nor faster guy and really his whole game is based around press man to man and Harris in zone just hasn't looked good.

Collins just makes mental mistakes which sooner or later lead to him giving up a big play. But he's getting better at it, but man to man would be better for him or just read the QB.

Everyone else I think zone would help.... other than maybe Bush..... I don't know about him. But I would try to limit Bigby, Bishop, Poppinga, Kampman on fast WR if they could help it.

I think Harris would be fine in
zone. After all, the guy was playing zone when intercepting Hasselbeck's pass for the win a few years back. He's not as fast as other corners but he still runs with the best of them.

I still think Bigby has the potential to be an impact safety like Bob Sanders and Troy Polamalu, but he really needs to show up.

Rouse's combination of speed and size could make him a star too.

IMO we should still keep the man to man coverage. Our secondary was top of the line last year. Ya sure passes got through but thats because there was no pressure on their QB (IMO).

Rarely did someone beat one of our corners. Seemed to be only when weather was a factor did it come into play.
