Looking at the Giants Roster I would guess they had him on the team for preseason as a safety incase of injury. Looking at their depth I can understand not keeping Jones around.

Lucky us.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Just to make sure. Jones was just cut by a team that went 6-10 last year. He was released earlier by a team that went 3-13 last year with him.

He had a career low average and long catch last year. Yes, there are all sorts of excuses for why. But let's not forget the most damning statistic.

31

He's not a savior. He's taking the place of someone that has upside while he has none. Yes he may be consistent. Yes he may know the offense. But he's old and he doesn't play special teams. Limited value.

In my opinion.

Could turn into a really smart move if Cobb's dinged up again at any point in the season which seems more likely than not.

INSIDER INFO: DAMN, COBB WAS PUT ON IR designated to return.

[David Cobb from Tenn that is-haha, Happy Labor Day Fools-thought it'd be too cruel to post that as a new thread topic]

Tex, I’m shocked, the Harris cut idea is nothing more than me stealing your idea. Wasn’t it you who said, weeks ago, with Monty and Cobb we only need 2 RBs since Neal, Crockett and Harris are not worthy of a roster spot?

I think Harris is the 53rd most talented guy on roster as it sits; he’s the guy who should be the first to go; with Crockett on PS and Neal available if one arm- drop passes in game-Harris gets cut and doesn’t make PS, we’ll be okay.

If the roster spot is garnered from the receiver group; there’s 2 choices: Cut Janis or place the real Cobb on IR-DTR. Or if I’m wrong on my evaluation of White; they may cut him thinking he’ll make PS.

My predictions of carrying 9 OL; 11 DBs was based on my player evaluations; Ted Thompson keeps the most talented guys and ya can only dress 46 each week anyways. Taylor, Walker, Goodson and Banjo aren’t going anywhere; unless by trade or injuries exceed the 7 inactives and/or necessitate a person be added to one of the smaller numbered position groups.

Backman actually might be the 53rd most talented and Perillo is the 3rd best TE on this team and something we’d need if injury occurs or Q gets suspended. I forgot how aggressive Ted Thompson can be: I didn’t think Perillo would be claimed; but didn’t think that was a chance Ted Thompson would take. I feared Backman would be claimed, that guy has upside. As usual, Ted Thompson did the right thing, He keeps Kuhn and his leadership, who can play TE in a pinch until Perillo can be activated and we don’t lose Backman, who would have been gone given the claiming of Henry [that surprised me, gotta relook at his play to see what I missed, bet Denver’s just trying to scout us].

So that’s why I see Harris as the best option for cutting when Jones is signed. And note: Abby and Vaughters all safe and Pinkard will be too.

Your take on the TE position seems way off base. Backman clearly showed more ability and performed better than Perillo.

Your post just above the one I quoted sounded extremely paranoid. You make these weird claims that smack of some sort of insider info, then you cry "personal attack" at the mere question of whether you are some damn media member or employee of the team or what. How about some full disclosure - or else not passing off speculation as knowledge.

I would strongly hope damn Jones is inactive Week 1 - every week if it was up to me. I highly doubt he would make any special teams contribution. and he's a distant 5th IMO among WRs. Yet with the damn seniority based decisions the Packers so often seem to make, I expect he will be active.

With Ty and Cobb nursing pre-season injuries, James Jones is a nice insurance policy. Y'all need to chill.

Deal is not done yet; when it is it'll be 1 yr; 870K; it'll be fully guaranteed if he's on the roster before Game 1, which he will be and then his cap hit will be on 585K.

That being said, which one of the youngsters do we ditch next year to make space for Jordy? Doubt said person would be tradable/have any value even if they did play a full year as a #5. Only person it would hurt at all is whoever's going to be the #5 in practice on the current roster as he's going to be on the field less (assuming Jones will be #4). So I don't think the effect on any youngsters we're actually going to have past this year is notable.

Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Fining them is the goal, per the people who made the rule anyway.
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still waiting on the kickoff rule changes. Did hear yesterday that the touchback proposal will now be the 30 yard line, not the 35
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Probably speed of game issues with your proposal
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Hopefully the refs don't get in the habit of throwing flags on this
beast (25-Mar) : I think when it comes to Challenges should get two strikes, so unlimited challenges as long as they keep winning them, but 2 wrong then done
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still subject to the fines etc
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Yes, I should have been more specific. Also, they are now saying it would be a 15 yard penalty. That makes more sense .
