Packers Grant, Woodson expected to suit up vs. Cowboys

Associated Press

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers should be in good shape for their Sunday night game against Dallas, listing running back Ryan Grant and cornerback Charles Woodson as probable on the injury report.
Injury reports around the league
The Packers are in good health heading into their mathcup with the Cowboys, but not all teams are as fortunate. Check out the Week 3 injury reports. More ...

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said after practice Friday that Grant and Woodson would play Sunday. Grant went through the full practice after being off the field most of the week to allow extra recovery for a sore hamstring that has bothered him since early in the preseason.

"He looked good," McCarthy said. "I thought he had more bounce in his step. I thought he looked better this week than last week."

Woodson didn't practice the entire week to rest a broken right toe, but he was on a similar schedule last week and responded with one of the best performances of his 11-year pro career. Woodson intercepted two passes late in the game, returning the second for a touchdown to seal the Packers' 48-25 win at Detroit.

"I'd be surprised if he doesn't (play Sunday)," McCarthy said.

McCarthy added he's never coached a player who had the resilience of Woodson to miss significant time in practice because of injury and manage to play so well.

"To do it off of the film study and the meetings and the walkthroughs and things like that, I haven't seen anybody perform at that level," McCarthy said. "He's also experienced, too. He has a ton of experience and is a very smart football player. But, the ability to pull it all together and deal with the pain threshold and things like that, I think it's very unique what he's been able to do."

Woodson didn't play in the Packers' late-season loss at Dallas last year after injuring a different toe in the previous game.

The Cowboys exploited the Woodson-less secondary. Terrell Owens had seven catches for 156 yards and a touchdown. Patrick Crayton caught two touchdown passes. Tight end Jason Witten had six receptions.

The Packers will again be a starter down in the secondary Sunday. Safety Atari Bigby is their only player listed as out for the game (strained hamstring).

Aaron Rouse will start in Bigby's spot. McCarthy gave Rouse a vote of confidence after the second-year player had a couple of breakdowns in pass coverage after replacing Bigby in the second half last Sunday.

"The big thing for young players is to get those quality reps, whether it's during the week and ultimately in the game," McCarthy said. "With (Rouse's) ability to get the first-unit reps this week, that in itself will really help him.

"The one thing about Aaron is he's been very productive with the opportunities he's had, so we have full confidence in him."

McCarthy indicated center Scott Wells would be available in some capacity for the first time this season. Wells practiced the last three days after being out for two weeks because of a chronic back injury.

"I thought Scott had a very good week," McCarthy said. "He looked like his old self out there today. He came out of Wednesday and Thursday's practices pain-free. We'll see how Scott is in the morning, and we'll move forward accordingly."

McCarthy, who first wanted to meet with his assistants and the medical staff, hasn't decided whether to give Wells his starting job back right away.

"It's either start him, or he'll be the backup. Those are the two options," McCarthy said.

If Wells is in the starting lineup Sunday, Jason Spitz would move from center to right guard, where Tony Moll played the first two games.

Spitz said Friday he had a 50-50 split of reps at center and right guard in practice this week.

Good news, last time we played dallas we didnt have woodson.

I was surprised how ineffective Grant was last week. I was expecting a bigger game from him against the Lions.

Grant will have a breakout game. I think all the Packers will be up for this game like Dallass was for the last game. I love Woodson. He is one tough SOB. I wish Bigby was playing. I was hoping to see him lay out TO more than once. Will the Hawk take to the air again this Sunday? I sure hope so.
I can hear the playcallers now. "Romo is down! Romo is down! It's doubtful he will return this game." Not that I'm hoping for an injury. Call it a gut feeling. It's the same feeling I had before my sons game Friday and I knew he would have a big game. I was right. He was awsome and so will the Packers be on Sunday. Rodgers will make believers out of the unbelievers.

Mucky Tundra (2h) : End of a Degu-era
dhazer (3h) : Steelers sign Patterson because of new kickoff rule interesting
Zero2Cool (5h) : Former #Packers TE Josiah Deguara is signing a 1-year deal with the Jaguars, per source.
Zero2Cool (6h) : They do not do it for "content sake".
dfosterf (17h) : For the record, I enjoy Beast and Mucky drafts
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Haha
Mucky Tundra (27-Mar) : No time for talking! Back to work beast!
beast (27-Mar) : You saw only 4,201 of my mocks? 🥺 I think that means you missed more than half of them 😢
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Does anyone know what Lambeau field improvements got put on hold? My guess would be for the 2025 draft
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : It's like listen, you made 4,201 mocks, no shit.
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Cuz during the draft "I had them mocked there!" as if it's amazing.
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : They're fun to do once in awhile. It's people who think they are "content" that annoy me.
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Against tbd
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Answer to your question is yes, it's a Thursday, will be the Chiefs aga
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Luckily for all concerned, I don't post them. I did one, but that was like 25 mocks ago
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : NFL 2024 gonna start Sept 5th isn't it???
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Ugh... kids these days!
dfosterf (27-Mar) : I'm gonna go do some more mock draft hell instead 🤪
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Did we do one of those prediction threads yet for 2024 season?
dfosterf (27-Mar) : In my city, they are playing the nimby game, in order to keep some railroad tracks vs. 2 professional sports teams and a concert venue.
dfosterf (27-Mar) : And/Or a city council, of which I haven't seen a good one in a very long time
dfosterf (27-Mar) : That sounds like a Mayor, not a city.
buckeyepackfan (26-Mar) : Packers halt scheduled 80mil upgrade of stadium until lease agreement talks are restarted
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : City of Green Bay puts Packers' Lambeau Field lease talks on hold
buckeyepackfan (26-Mar) : Packers 1 of 3 teams to vote no on new kickoff rule.
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Packers sign another Kicker
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Lengthy explanation at PFF if you click the link
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Kickoff rules officially changed.ngthy explan
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : lol
Cheesey (26-Mar) : 2009? No thanks! One open heart surgery is enough!
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Good for you!
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Yes. That's the one.
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Is that "Lady Dugan" per chance?
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Crystal?
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Please refresh my memory
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Alan posts. Crystal back in my life. It's 2009 all over again! Lol
Mucky Tundra (26-Mar) : BAH GAWD! THAT'S CHEESEYS MUSIC!
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Gutekunst said early stages of Jordan Love contract being discussed.
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Shouldn't be penalized cuz official screwed up
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Yeah, challenge until you are incorrect twice.
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Fining them is the goal, per the people who made the rule anyway.
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still waiting on the kickoff rule changes. Did hear yesterday that the touchback proposal will now be the 30 yard line, not the 35
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Probably speed of game issues with your proposal
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Hopefully the refs don't get in the habit of throwing flags on this
beast (25-Mar) : I think when it comes to Challenges should get two strikes, so unlimited challenges as long as they keep winning them, but 2 wrong then done
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still subject to the fines etc
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Yes, I should have been more specific. Also, they are now saying it would be a 15 yard penalty. That makes more sense .
beast (25-Mar) : Simply fined in the week to follow
beast (25-Mar) : I agree with one NFL official, it'll probably be like some of the helmets hits, not really called by the refs on the field but simply fined
