GREEN BAY—He was the last of the 11 players the Packers drafted a year ago, and he was lost for the season to a hamstring injury that occurred in the same game a more noteworthy teammate broke his collarbone.

With all the talk swirling that the Packers might target an inside linebacker high in this week’s draft, this linebacker is rarely mentioned in the discussion at the position because he didn’t play a snap on defense as a rookie. He was just starting to show up on the stat sheet on special teams when he landed on injured reserve.

Got any guesses? He’s Sam Barrington, practically a forgotten member of the 2013 Packers, but he could be more important to the 2014 Packers than many realize.

“I haven’t proven anything, yet, and if you’re the forgotten guy, it’s OK,” Barrington said recently after one of his offseason workouts at Lambeau Field. “When and if you do make that comeback, people won’t forget about you the second time.”

Needs to prove he can cover.

We've already got slow run thumpers.

Yeah, and Bishop had terrible speed measurables similar to Chris Borland's but he was 3 inches taller and was incredible on the bench putting up 33 reps, (Borland did 27) and we got that guy in the 6th round, and Borland is going to go 2nd-4th.

Barrington may have run the worst combine 40 time of any LB I've ever seen at 4.91. Borland ran 4.83. Sam did run the 40 at his pro day and he netted a 4.69 but those pro days are notorious for padding players times with hand timing verses computer.

It was interesting reading that Barrington's college coach, Jim Leavitt, called him the best LB he'd ever seen when Sam was a freshman.

Here's hoping Barrington is another late round gem for the Packers but his numbers don't really compare favorably even with Bishop's.

Brad Jones has superior numbers speed wise to Barrington's and many think he's terrible.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."

Man, I would love to see Sam Barrington do it, be such a splash that he wins the ILB slot next to Hawk. That will be a tall order though, as I believe Ted drafts the next starter there this week. If Barrington simply becomes a STs ace, that would be a huge help. Hopefully he will add quality depth at the ILB spot, if not start.

I don't think anyone begrudges Brad Jones' measureables. It is just that he seems to lack the instincts to consistently make plays, run or pass. He ought to be way better than he is...

The loss of Nick Collins is in a class of its own. He was a playmaking leader. He covered up others mistakes in the secondary. Cullen Jenkins was missed too, but second tier.

Desmond Bishop, when he was inserted, I mentioned way back that the defense just seemed tougher. I couldn't place it specifically. It just seemed like the hits were harder or more fierce.

This article had more relevance than we may have initially given it. Barrington battling will be something I will be watching a lot in training camp as well as Lattimore showing his worth to the team since we let Manning go. Like safety last year; someone needs to step up. Unlike safety last year, I think someone does. Might it be Barrington?

dfosterf (19-Apr) : The only problem with that is he isn't a guard either.
dfosterf (19-Apr) : Put him at right guard. That is where he will be coached. That is where he will compete. He is not even allowed to look at the LT playbook.
dfosterf (18-Apr) : Kidding aside, I hope the best for him.
dfosterf (18-Apr) : Went to a Titans board. One comment there. Not very long. I quote: "LOL" They don't sound overly upset about our aquisition.
