Kind of a different spin.. albeit working for Dad probably has a share of extra perks that go along with it.. but hey.. it is nice to see.

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/story/943922.html

You might think professional athletes have become spoiled. Might think the money and the fans and the hype have all conspired to strip them of their humility or sever any connection between them and regular fans.

Please meet Royals pitcher Kyle Davies, in a way that has to surprise you.

Im a laborer, man, he says into his cell phone. [img_r]http://media.kansascity.com/smedia/2008/12/18/23/721-kyle_davies_pitching_12-19-2008_SP16VAH8.embedded.prod_affiliate.81.jpg[/img_r]

This was not a reference to needing to get his pitch count down. Actually, that was not a reference to pitching at all.

When Davies said that, he was driving home after a long days work, away from a construction site where hes been spending his days this offseason near his Georgia home.

Some guys are called throwbacks because they slide headfirst or wear a buzzcut or dont celebrate in the end zone. Davies might be more of a throwback than any of them.

Hes working a construction job to stay off the couch, keep active and make a little extra money although whatever hes making is a significant pay cut from the $427,000 he made with the Royals last year.

I work as a contractor, he says. A little of everything. I pour concrete, dig ditches, lay pipe, get on the machines, pick up garbage. Whatever they need me to do.

Sounds weird, right? But the guy who won all five of his September starts, the guy who Royals fans hope will fill out the rotation behind Zack Greinke and Gil Meche, toils and sweats, just like a lot of big-leaguers used to do before luxury suites and TV contracts made all that unnecessary.

Davies father, Hiram, runs a business that builds and renovates a lot of McDonalds restaurants. Hiram Davies is undoubtedly biased on this subject but calls his son the most dependable worker you can find.

Off but mostly on, Kyle Davies has worked for his fathers company since he was 12 or 13. His first day, they needed to put some insulation above a ceiling, and because Davies was the rookie and the smallest one, they had him do it.

Nobody mentioned that crawling around in all that insulation would make him itch like all heck, and Davies didnt make the connection until he got home and felt as if he wanted to rip his skin off. Instead, he jumped in the pool.

You could say there was some rookie hazing on the job that day, Hiram Davies said.

On draft day 2001, instead of waiting around by the phone, the Davieses went to build a McDonalds off Interstate 75 in downtown Atlanta. They were repairing a broken backhoe when Hiram Davies cell phone rang and a friend of Kyles said that the Braves had taken him in the fourth round.

Father and son smiled, hugged and then finished fixing that backhoe.

Now hes on the brink of establishing a big-league career. He signs a lot of baseballs for the guys he works with, but mostly, they treat him as they did when they tricked him into getting in that itchy insulation.

He didnt work the last two offseasons. In 2006, he was rehabbing a groin injury. Last year, he didnt have much of an excuse and didnt like that he was just sitting around.

I think its smart, Royals general manager Dayton Moore said of Davies offseason work. Keeps him in a routine. I know hes very intelligent about how he goes about it, and he doesnt compromise any of his preparation for the baseball season.

There are times when Davies doesnt like the work. Its hard. Running a jackhammer isnt fun for anybody. But he likes the challenge, likes the feeling after a hard days work and the sense of accomplishment that comes with seeing a project from beginning to end.

I think the Brewers could use a few of these guys. Hell he works for nowhere near the money GAG-ME recieved for doing nothing last year.

The Brewers should have never gave him that money. He was brilliant once, but his arm was done by the time they signed him.

I think you wil see a big drop off from K-Rod this year, and that is why my Angeles were not willing to anti up to re sign him. Happens alot to fireball relievers. Short life and out of gas too soon.

Mucky Tundra (15h) : End of a Degu-era
dhazer (16h) : Steelers sign Patterson because of new kickoff rule interesting
Zero2Cool (19h) : Former #Packers TE Josiah Deguara is signing a 1-year deal with the Jaguars, per source.
Zero2Cool (20h) : They do not do it for "content sake".
dfosterf (28-Mar) : For the record, I enjoy Beast and Mucky drafts
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Haha
Mucky Tundra (27-Mar) : No time for talking! Back to work beast!
beast (27-Mar) : You saw only 4,201 of my mocks? 🥺 I think that means you missed more than half of them 😢
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Does anyone know what Lambeau field improvements got put on hold? My guess would be for the 2025 draft
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : It's like listen, you made 4,201 mocks, no shit.
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Cuz during the draft "I had them mocked there!" as if it's amazing.
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : They're fun to do once in awhile. It's people who think they are "content" that annoy me.
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Against tbd
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Answer to your question is yes, it's a Thursday, will be the Chiefs aga
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Luckily for all concerned, I don't post them. I did one, but that was like 25 mocks ago
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : NFL 2024 gonna start Sept 5th isn't it???
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Ugh... kids these days!
dfosterf (27-Mar) : I'm gonna go do some more mock draft hell instead 🤪
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Did we do one of those prediction threads yet for 2024 season?
dfosterf (27-Mar) : In my city, they are playing the nimby game, in order to keep some railroad tracks vs. 2 professional sports teams and a concert venue.
dfosterf (27-Mar) : And/Or a city council, of which I haven't seen a good one in a very long time
dfosterf (27-Mar) : That sounds like a Mayor, not a city.
buckeyepackfan (26-Mar) : Packers halt scheduled 80mil upgrade of stadium until lease agreement talks are restarted
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : City of Green Bay puts Packers' Lambeau Field lease talks on hold
buckeyepackfan (26-Mar) : Packers 1 of 3 teams to vote no on new kickoff rule.
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Packers sign another Kicker
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Lengthy explanation at PFF if you click the link

Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Yes. That's the one.
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Is that "Lady Dugan" per chance?
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Crystal?
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Please refresh my memory
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Alan posts. Crystal back in my life. It's 2009 all over again! Lol
Mucky Tundra (26-Mar) : BAH GAWD! THAT'S CHEESEYS MUSIC!
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Gutekunst said early stages of Jordan Love contract being discussed.
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Shouldn't be penalized cuz official screwed up
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Yeah, challenge until you are incorrect twice.
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Fining them is the goal, per the people who made the rule anyway.
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still waiting on the kickoff rule changes. Did hear yesterday that the touchback proposal will now be the 30 yard line, not the 35
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Probably speed of game issues with your proposal
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Hopefully the refs don't get in the habit of throwing flags on this
beast (25-Mar) : I think when it comes to Challenges should get two strikes, so unlimited challenges as long as they keep winning them, but 2 wrong then done
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still subject to the fines etc
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Yes, I should have been more specific. Also, they are now saying it would be a 15 yard penalty. That makes more sense .
