Surprise player of 2008?

Gus Frerotte.

He has been the difference in the Vikings offense. I didn't think this old washed up guy would amount to much but, he has been a pleasan t surprise to the Minnesota Vikngs.

As much as I dislike the Vikings, credit needs to go where its due.

Who pleasantly surprised you with their play in 2008... someone you didn't expect to play that well.

I have a hard time picking one.. honestly.

Collins probably gets the nod, but he has played solidly in years past.. never made the impact plays like this year, but always got less credit than he deserved on this defense.

Jeremy Thompson a little based off preseason showing.. when healthy that is.

Tony Moll lately.. didn't think he had it in him, really.. though he was on his last tour here.

Harris coming back from injury.. but he has played up to par with other season..

Maybe Rodgers.. I didn't expect this much out of him...

Honestly though.. not many preformed better than I expected them to. Many under played.. that there is a bad sign overall.

Please share your thoughts.. and players I might be under valuing.

Collins. He was pissing me off last year with his dropped INTs.
This year - 5 INTs, 3 returned for TDs (#1 in the NFL), and Pro Bowl starter. I'm very happy with him.

Tramon Williams. He has shown that he can be a solid CB(which is very rare) in the NFL. He hasn't been elite or anything. But very solid.

Last season I first started to become a Tramon fan. Mostly for his return success. Now I'm even more of a fan of his.

I'm going to deviate a little and give props to Daryn Colledge.

He was supposed to lose his spot, first to Barbre and then Sitton. He was supposed to finally be benched. But he retained his spot and has (very surprisingly) been our best O-linemen this year. Didn't think for a second I'd say that last off-season, so he's been a pleasant surprise too.

That said, you have to pick Tramon Williams. Not only has he emerged to show he can be a solid NFL CB, but he's displayed play-making ability that I'd have never guessed he had. I'm taking about things like forcing a fumble after being burned, running back to make an INT after biting on a fake (I think it was the Atlanta game), and just doing a solid job all around.

Nick Collins for sure. I thought Aaron Rouse would replace him as the starter before the season started. Guess I was wrong on that one. It's been Atari Bigby who even when on the field has been the disappointment. Not Nick Collins.

Collins has become one of three Packers I believe need to be signed long term. Kampman and Jennings the others and yes I know Kampman is signed for a few more years, but he deserves a raise.

I'm going with Rodgers. Not necessarily for his level of performance, which has been pretty damn good, but for the toughness he showed playing through his shoulder injury. I was sure he would miss at least one game this season to injury and (knock on wood) it looks like he's not going to.

That's been my biggest surprise this year.

That is true. A lot of people probably didn't think he would make it this far into the season without missing a game or two.

Ah, good one. He's been beaten, but he's had his moments as well. Give him another year. He's improving fast. He's got a lot of flash too.

Maybe at tackle.. but as a guard, he makes far to many mistakes yet in year 4 to be an effective player.. he plays pretty decent ball if he is allowed to directly engage the defender without thinking in pass protection.. if they run a stunt or two at him then watch him struggle.

I point to this as why I think he has a future at Tackle.. he plays naturally tall and at tackle, your responsibilities are lessened in stunt pickups.. if your man stunts inside, most schemes have you pick up the twist or outside contain first, simpler read.. at guard, you have to make a decision quickly to pick up inside or outside contain.. you have to know what the responsibilities of the center, tackle and backs are and properly read to stunt/blitz.. more complex than the tackle spot. Colledge still thinks to much and is slow to react inside.. can't have that after 4 years.

In the Running game, he still plays to tall and can't get much push even though he is one of the strongest guys on the team, piss poor technique and the coaching staff either hasn't gotten him to change or they are the problem themselves.

I think Spitz has had a better year.. honestly.
