The millions of TV viewers in the U.S. who receive over-the-air television free via antennas could be forced to pay. ... but will you? Apparently they will be removed from cable and satellite.

This is regarding CBS and FOX debating on moving from the free over the air availability to a subscription business model.

I refuse to have Cable and same goes for Satellite. I feel it's a waste of money. The girls and I don't watch much TV, but we do catch a movie or two a week. I shell out a whopping ~$8 a month for Netflix. I don't think I'll pay to watch the few shows like Big Bang Theory or NCIS or the show Keiana likes, Bones.

we have satellite. I rarely watch tv. If it were just me I wouldn't have it at all. So I was thinking that i don't care if they go to fee based or not. Then I realized I wouldn't get to watch the Packer games and that frustrated me. Then I realized that I don't get half of them any way.

I'm curious as to what the NFL will say to this. On one hand, they might be against it since a lot people won't be seeing their games. On the other hand, they seem intent on forcing people to pay money just to watch their games as evidenced by the Thursday night games and the last Thanksgiving game the past few years.

All in all, just seems to be another example of traditional media unable to adapt to the internet.

My belief is that it is just a public stance to apply pressure to this court decision.. basically the networks are not getting there cut of this money.. Aereo is taking a "free" product, streaming it, and profiting from it without paying its source any revenue.

Source...

Another television network has joined the broadcaster backlash following last week's court decision upholding Internet TV company Aereo's right to stream broadcast TV without paying retransmission fees.

Like rival Fox TV, CBS, the parent company of CNET, is considering alternative ways to monetize its television content in the face of Aereo's service, including cutting off broadcast signals in favor of a subscription-only model, The New York Times reported today. The revelation comes a day after Chase Carey, chief operations officer of News Corp., indicated that Fox would change its business model to ensure it gets paid for TV content it produces.

"We need the dual revenue stream model of retransmission fees and advertising to sustain our business," Carey said yesterday at National Association of Broadcasters' annual trade show in Las Vegas. "We will pursue our rights fully both legally and politically to protect our rights. But if we can't get our rights protected, we will pursue business solutions to take our network and turn it into a subscription service."

what happened to the phrase I hear on baseball telecasts all the time?

Any rebroadcast, retransmission, or account of this game, without the express written consent of Major League Baseball, is prohibited.

I assumed bars and other people who could profit by retransmission could not tap into the signal without paying for it. It that just a bunch of BS trying to scare off the little guy? Doesn't the NFL take a similar stance? I wonder why this simple line doesn't work for the networks as well. It seems so simple. You can't get something for free so pay the people who make it.

The service that is pissing off CBS and FOX is I believe omitting commercials and that's why the networks are pissed off. Networks use regional commercials for certain demographics and when its rebroadcasted without their control, they lose that marketing control. But a bar or restaurant can rebroadcast a game on a certain nite (Final Four Championship game or Super Bowl. I can see a bar in Louisville doing so every Thur for a few weeks.) and thus be in trouble.

Oh, I didn't know what you meant then, my mistake. I thought you meant airing it live. So bars actually "DVR" events and replay them? I see Walmart replays Super Bowl XLV all of the time in their Packers section.

I'm with Kev as in I damn near refuse to pay for cable. We have it now, though, but only for 6 months. Because of a promo that brought the bundle (internet/basic cable) cost down to the same price as our internet alone. And we got HBO as a bonus. As soon as this following NFL season is up, I'm canceling the cable.

But I really, REALLY hope the idea of subscription fees for over-the-air broadcasting via ANY big network doesn't even sniff the light of day. That's effin' bogus.

dfosterf (8-Apr) : Question of the week for me: Has anyone besides me done any deep dive into the potential of Alex McGough, our 3rd string qb?

beast (5-Apr) : The 25th pick in the draft has been an offensive player since 2017, 2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB, 1 OC
Mucky Tundra (5-Apr) : Odd, why give up a 2025 2nd Rounder for him if you're just gonna let him walk?
Zero2Cool (4-Apr) : Texans to let Diggs be free agent in '25
buckeyepackfan (4-Apr) : 49r's aign RB Patrick Taylor.

Mucky Tundra (4-Apr) : Gotta imagine that Green Bay vs Houston will be a primetime game this upcoming season
Zero2Cool (3-Apr) : No. Kill QB. No worries. 😁
Mucky Tundra (3-Apr) : Diggs, Collins, Dell and Schultz is gonna be tough to cover
Zero2Cool (3-Apr) : Stefon Diggs' trade will not be processed as a post-June 1 designation, so that is just over $31 million in dead cap this year.
Zero2Cool (3-Apr) : Bills trading WR Stefon Diggs to the Texans in exchange for a 2025 2nd-round pick. (via @rapsheet)
beast (3-Apr) : Using Patterson as RB and RB/WR tweener... so I think they also signed Patterson as a 3rd down RB, not just a kick returner as articles are
beast (3-Apr) : I think PFT missed the real Steelers/Patterson connection, Steelers new OC Arthur Smith has been Patterson's head coach the last 3 years
wpr (2-Apr) : It has Martha. I was stunned when I was in HS to learn Iowa was still playing half court BB in the 70's.
Martha Careful (2-Apr) : Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese...women's sports has come a long way. GREAT TO SEE!!
Martha Careful (31-Mar) : Happy Easter everyone. I hope you all have a great day.
dfosterf (28-Mar) : Maybe
Mucky Tundra (28-Mar) : Yes
Zero2Cool (28-Mar) : No.
Mucky Tundra (28-Mar) : End of a Degu-era
dhazer (28-Mar) : Steelers sign Patterson because of new kickoff rule interesting
Zero2Cool (28-Mar) : Former #Packers TE Josiah Deguara is signing a 1-year deal with the Jaguars, per source.
Zero2Cool (28-Mar) : They do not do it for "content sake".
dfosterf (28-Mar) : For the record, I enjoy Beast and Mucky drafts
