http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000119943/article/lovie-smith-fired-by-chicago-bears

We have our first surprising name to be fired on Black Monday. Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith was fired Monday, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. Smith met with upper management this morning. Bears assistants were very nervous, according to Rapoport.

Smith had a few things working against him, starting with the reality that he hasn't made the playoffs for five of the last six years. An even bigger factor: GM Phil Emery was just hired last year. New decision makers usually want to bring in their own head coaches.

NFL.com's Albert Breer reported last week that Emery and other GM candidates were told a year ago that they had to keep Smith for 2012, but Smith's future after that would be up to them. Now Emery exercised that right. The Bears failed to make the playoffs after a 7-1 start. While Smith's defense is still dangerous, he's consistently been unable to improve the offense through his staff hires.

Smith coached the Bears for nine seasons, making the playoffs three times, including one Super Bowl appearance. The defense was always good, but this was a team that more often hung around the middle of the NFL.

With Smith out, Jay Cutler is going to have to start over with another offensive coordinator. A defense full of players fit to Smith's scheme may not fit well anymore.

This was a sensible time to make a change, but the Bears may have to take a step back in 2013 before taking a step forward.

Imagine if we won yesterday.. This might have never happened πŸ€”

God dammit - I wanted that man there forever! Always loved the deer in the headlights look when something went bad, backed by the arrogance that he thought he had it all under control. If Andy Reid gets hired by the Bears, he might actually turn Cutler into a good quarterback. What a horrible turn of events.

UPDATE: Fox Sports insider and NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer notes the Bears have already asked for permission to interview Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.

I'm not too concerned, as manglement in Chicago is too stupid to hang on to Smith, so practically by definition they would be too stupid to hire Reid.

He was an AWFUL HC. He was a BRILLIANT DC.

If our D bombs in the Playoffs, fire Dom and hire Lovie Smith as our DC. I'm dead serious. Devon Hester will request a trade to the Packers if this happens. Hester's love for Smith is well known.

If we have Hester as our returner and Lovie Smith as our DC, and shore up the OL with one or two workable players (they don't have to be Solid, just average is fine), we'll go 17-2 next year with a SB win. Easily.

Of course, this is a pipe dream. We'll never see Smith as a DC on the Packers. For some strange reason, πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ή and πŸ‡²πŸ‡² are sold on Dom. I have no idea why. Opposing Os have him figured out.

Now Smith has had a top 5 D five times. Dom has had one. 5 > 1. And it's not because of a lack of talent on our side.

Zombie, you are talking out of your ass. We do not have the personnel to play a cover 2 sysetem because we have been building a 3-4 defense. It'd take 2-3 years to make the conversion over, and I don't even believe that is a shut down defense. It is a defense built to make an offense go on long drives, but it's weakness is up the seams and there are too many good tight ends in this league that shred cover 2s.

Lovie's supposed success was built on beating up the weak sisters of the league and he has never been able to piss with the big boys, even with that very strong team that went to the super bowl a decade ago.

So, I retract what I said about Lovie Smith.

But Capers is not a bad coach at all. Can't blame coaching for everything I think if we stink it up in the playoffs he may get one more shot. Because starting this year we're sorta starting to rebuild a defense.

Mucky Tundra (14h) : No time for talking! Back to work beast!
beast (15h) : You saw only 4,201 of my mocks? πŸ₯Ί I think that means you missed more than half of them 😒
dfosterf (18h) : Does anyone know what Lambeau field improvements got put on hold? My guess would be for the 2025 draft
Zero2Cool (20h) : It's like listen, you made 4,201 mocks, no shit.
Zero2Cool (20h) : Cuz during the draft "I had them mocked there!" as if it's amazing.
Zero2Cool (20h) : They're fun to do once in awhile. It's people who think they are "content" that annoy me.
dfosterf (20h) : Against tbd
dfosterf (20h) : Answer to your question is yes, it's a Thursday, will be the Chiefs aga
dfosterf (20h) : Luckily for all concerned, I don't post them. I did one, but that was like 25 mocks ago
Zero2Cool (21h) : NFL 2024 gonna start Sept 5th isn't it???
Zero2Cool (21h) : Ugh... kids these days!
dfosterf (21h) : I'm gonna go do some more mock draft hell instead πŸ€ͺ
Zero2Cool (21h) : Did we do one of those prediction threads yet for 2024 season?
dfosterf (21h) : In my city, they are playing the nimby game, in order to keep some railroad tracks vs. 2 professional sports teams and a concert venue.
dfosterf (21h) : And/Or a city council, of which I haven't seen a good one in a very long time
dfosterf (22h) : That sounds like a Mayor, not a city.
buckeyepackfan (26-Mar) : Packers halt scheduled 80mil upgrade of stadium until lease agreement talks are restarted
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : City of Green Bay puts Packers' Lambeau Field lease talks on hold
buckeyepackfan (26-Mar) : Packers 1 of 3 teams to vote no on new kickoff rule.
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Packers sign another Kicker
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Lengthy explanation at PFF if you click the link
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Kickoff rules officially changed.ngthy explan
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : lol
Cheesey (26-Mar) : 2009? No thanks! One open heart surgery is enough!
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Good for you!
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Yes. That's the one.
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Is that "Lady Dugan" per chance?
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Crystal?
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Please refresh my memory
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Alan posts. Crystal back in my life. It's 2009 all over again! Lol
Mucky Tundra (26-Mar) : BAH GAWD! THAT'S CHEESEYS MUSIC!
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Gutekunst said early stages of Jordan Love contract being discussed.
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Shouldn't be penalized cuz official screwed up
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Yeah, challenge until you are incorrect twice.
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Fining them is the goal, per the people who made the rule anyway.
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still waiting on the kickoff rule changes. Did hear yesterday that the touchback proposal will now be the 30 yard line, not the 35
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Probably speed of game issues with your proposal
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Hopefully the refs don't get in the habit of throwing flags on this
beast (25-Mar) : I think when it comes to Challenges should get two strikes, so unlimited challenges as long as they keep winning them, but 2 wrong then done
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still subject to the fines etc
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Yes, I should have been more specific. Also, they are now saying it would be a 15 yard penalty. That makes more sense .
beast (25-Mar) : Simply fined in the week to follow
beast (25-Mar) : I agree with one NFL official, it'll probably be like some of the helmets hits, not really called by the refs on the field but simply fined
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Hip drop is not. Super confusing. Referees job is harder
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Swivel hip drop is banned
dfosterf (25-Mar) : The hip drop enforcement will be in the form of fines, etc. Not flags
dfosterf (25-Mar) : A major foul will be enforced on the offense if there are offsetting penalties in a change of possession situation
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Teams will receive a 3rd challenge if 1 was successful. Previously, it took 2
