I was listening to something and they were ranting big time on how disgustingly bad the officiating has gotten in the NFL. It got me thinking, is the officiating getting worse or are fans given a more vocal voice (e.g. Social Media) and maybe getting more educated on what the rules are in the NFL?

I've watched games with people who are not familiar with the rules at all. And some who think they know all the rules. It's an interesting question.

Fans have complained about the refs since the beginning. What makes it worse is the cameras pick up every mistake. They have former refs sitting in a studio acting like they invented the game. There are team challenges. Video reviews. Worst of all the layer upon layer of new rules. Some seemingly contradict other rules.
Over the years GB has benefited by calls/non calls. But they have been hurt by even more. (A year or two ago some podcaster went back and looked at the then last 5 years.)
It may well be time for the "sky official" to weigh in. Not every play but on egregious mistakes by the ground crew. That in itself is open to deliberation. Just as MLB may need to go to the robo ump calling balls and strikes the technology is here. The leagues are multi billion dollar organizations. I don't understand why they continue to put out a substandard product when they can improve it.

If I was an NFL rules honcho in this day and age, I would instruct the officials to err on the side of keeping the flag in the pocket, with further instruction to warn players that were pushing on the rules.

The worst games I have seen involve referees calling a tight game.

Perhaps some combination of college and pro system is warranted. The college system attempt so rectify the semi-obvious screw-ups without having to overly involve coaches.

I think that the massive amount of gambling is also contributing to the fan interest in the officials and game calling as most sports have had some sort of corruption scandal. Hate to be a conspiracy guy, but man it is hard not to think that Vegas is influencing the games at times.

What disappoints me is with all these questionable calls is we often end of talking more about the zebras than the players/coaching.

Feel bad for a guy like EQ who is at risk of being cut once MVS comes back who finally makes a nice play for it to be reversed on a terrible call. I also think that Amos made the INT, but with all the cameras in the building they don't seem to have one on the back of the endzone for some reason.

Not sure if they have it out for us, or we have just been on the bad end of it - but after 2 horribly officiated games for us this year I can't help but wonder.

The SF game was just as bad, maybe worse. The refs literally saved SF from a blowout and nearly gave them the win. After these blunders - no discipline, no league apologies... just "Oh well, you have to outplay the shit calls." It's hard to watch these clowns destroy a game we all love, AND the league allows it to continue.

I think officiating is getting better, because refs know they're being watched and graded closer, where back in the day, the film wouldn't be good enough to tell the ref is wrong or not.

Now the video clearly shows it, so they've had to improve, the problem is technology has improved a hell of a lot, for fans to watch and review, and NFL has rejected adding most of that same technology to help the refs.

Instead Goodell and the head refs have decided to make the rules more vague, so the refs interpretation of said rules can be more vague, and the NFL can blindly back up the refs as the NFL under Goodell cares more about the PR of the game than the actual quality of the game.

And now, I'm pretty sure we saw evidence where the Refs aren't following the official rule book... as they overturned the St. Brown non-TD to be a TD extremely late... no ref on the field is doing that... that was probably the sky ref illegally talking with the refs on the field.

Just like the Refs started changing how they were calling the catch rule, the year before the catch rule officially changed.

So the NFL is now saying they're the official rule book, not what's actually written in the rule book.

Remember the fail mary play? The ref claimed the NFL that under no circumstances are they to call a penalties on the last seconds of a game... at the end of the game, just let players play...

Then in the NFC game Saints vs Rams... Saints get screwed when Rams player out right tackles Saints WR clearly before the ball is there and right in front of the ref... why? Ref is listening to the NFL and not calling penalties right before the end of the game.

It's hard for me to blame the actual on field refs... they generally seem to be doing the stupid shit their boss is tell them to do... sometimes your boss tells you to do stupid shit and you got to do it.

Mucky Tundra (38m) : End of a Degu-era
dhazer (1h) : Steelers sign Patterson because of new kickoff rule interesting
Zero2Cool (4h) : Former #Packers TE Josiah Deguara is signing a 1-year deal with the Jaguars, per source.
Zero2Cool (5h) : They do not do it for "content sake".
dfosterf (15h) : For the record, I enjoy Beast and Mucky drafts
Zero2Cool (22h) : Haha
Mucky Tundra (23h) : No time for talking! Back to work beast!
beast (23h) : You saw only 4,201 of my mocks? 🥺 I think that means you missed more than half of them 😢
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Does anyone know what Lambeau field improvements got put on hold? My guess would be for the 2025 draft
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : It's like listen, you made 4,201 mocks, no shit.
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Cuz during the draft "I had them mocked there!" as if it's amazing.
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : They're fun to do once in awhile. It's people who think they are "content" that annoy me.
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Against tbd
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Answer to your question is yes, it's a Thursday, will be the Chiefs aga
dfosterf (27-Mar) : Luckily for all concerned, I don't post them. I did one, but that was like 25 mocks ago
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : NFL 2024 gonna start Sept 5th isn't it???
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Ugh... kids these days!
dfosterf (27-Mar) : I'm gonna go do some more mock draft hell instead 🤪
Zero2Cool (27-Mar) : Did we do one of those prediction threads yet for 2024 season?
dfosterf (27-Mar) : In my city, they are playing the nimby game, in order to keep some railroad tracks vs. 2 professional sports teams and a concert venue.
dfosterf (27-Mar) : And/Or a city council, of which I haven't seen a good one in a very long time
dfosterf (27-Mar) : That sounds like a Mayor, not a city.
buckeyepackfan (26-Mar) : Packers halt scheduled 80mil upgrade of stadium until lease agreement talks are restarted
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : City of Green Bay puts Packers' Lambeau Field lease talks on hold
buckeyepackfan (26-Mar) : Packers 1 of 3 teams to vote no on new kickoff rule.
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Packers sign another Kicker
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Lengthy explanation at PFF if you click the link
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Kickoff rules officially changed.ngthy explan
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : lol
Cheesey (26-Mar) : 2009? No thanks! One open heart surgery is enough!
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Good for you!
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Yes. That's the one.
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Is that "Lady Dugan" per chance?
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Crystal?
dfosterf (26-Mar) : Please refresh my memory
Zero2Cool (26-Mar) : Alan posts. Crystal back in my life. It's 2009 all over again! Lol
Mucky Tundra (26-Mar) : BAH GAWD! THAT'S CHEESEYS MUSIC!
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Gutekunst said early stages of Jordan Love contract being discussed.
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Shouldn't be penalized cuz official screwed up
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Yeah, challenge until you are incorrect twice.
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Fining them is the goal, per the people who made the rule anyway.
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still waiting on the kickoff rule changes. Did hear yesterday that the touchback proposal will now be the 30 yard line, not the 35
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Probably speed of game issues with your proposal
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Hopefully the refs don't get in the habit of throwing flags on this
beast (25-Mar) : I think when it comes to Challenges should get two strikes, so unlimited challenges as long as they keep winning them, but 2 wrong then done
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Still subject to the fines etc
dfosterf (25-Mar) : Yes, I should have been more specific. Also, they are now saying it would be a 15 yard penalty. That makes more sense .
beast (25-Mar) : Simply fined in the week to follow
beast (25-Mar) : I agree with one NFL official, it'll probably be like some of the helmets hits, not really called by the refs on the field but simply fined
Zero2Cool (25-Mar) : Hip drop is not. Super confusing. Referees job is harder
